Never put that much thought in my ten favorite directors. In no order:

Kubrick - A Clockwork Orange
Ozu - Early Spring
Kieslowski - Three Colors: Red
Antonioni - Red Desert
Godard - Pierrot Le Fou
Miyazaki - Spirited Away
Hou - Millennium Mambo
Malick - Tree of Life
Hitchcock - Shadow of a Doubt
Denis - Chocolat

It is interesting how much this differs from my top ten.

My tastes are rather common and petty at times. A couple of my faves are in the Criterion Collection, but there not a chance in heck most of these others of these movies will make it in.
  1. James Cameron--Terminator 2: Judgment Day
  2. Christopher Nolan--The Dark Knight
  3. Akira Kurosawa--Seven Samurai
  4. David Fincher--Fight Club
  5. Quentin Tarantino--Kill Bill
  6. Denis Villeneuve--Sicario
  7. David Lynch--Eraserhead
  8. Stanley Kubrick--A Clockwork Orange
  9. JJ Abrams--Star Trek
  10. Zack Snyder--300

Here's my list (in no order):

Mathieu Kassovitz: La Haine/Assassin(s) (can't decide which one I like more)
Charlie Chaplin: The Kid/Modern Times (can't decide)
Akira Kurosawa: High and Low
Nicolas Winding Refn: Pusher 3/Drive (can't decide)
Chan-wook Park: Oldboy
Chris Marker: La jetée
David Fincher: Fight Club
Wim Wenders: Paris, Texas
Wes Anderson: Bottle Rocket/The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (can't decide)
Olivier Marchal: 36 Quai des Orfèvres
Steve McQueen: Hunger

Need to see more films from Truffaut, Godard, Melville, Ozu, De Sica, Tarkovsky...and from many others, so the list will expand I'm sure.

A Barry Lyndon Criterion Blu would be incredible

I have already posted a similar question on the 'official' Dekalog thread, but since that one has irrevocably derailed into an embittered dispute over its technical aspects, I'm reposting it here. For a (mostly) first time viewer, can anyone suggest whether I should watch the 10 films as they were released on television, or if I should jump into the longer, theatrical versions of episodes 5 and 6? Would it perhaps be too jarring a contrast, compared to the work as a whole, or would I benefit from watching those versions, even if it will be my first time watching them? Your suggestions would be most appreciated.

I squeezed in 5 first-watches over the weekend:

Blood for Dracula - Darn you, Criterion, for making this OOP! I can't believe I paid $80 for this. This felt like a bad Skinimax movie from way back. 5/10

Shallow Grave - Fantastic film. Like a funner, less disturbing version of American Psycho. Finally another title in the collection my wife would go for. 8/10

Insomnia - For some reason I thought this was going to be infinitely better than the American version similar to the original Vanishing. However, I think it is a push compared to Nolan's version. Solid, but not earth shattering. 8/10

Judex - If you like movies where people are knocked out and kidnapped, then this is for you. I felt like Dr. Evil's son: "Just kill them!!" I struggled keeping my attention on this one. 6/10

McCabe and Mrs. Miller - This is right up there with The Player for my favorite Altman. One of the grittiest westerns I've ever seen both in content and visually. Huge fan of this! 9/10

As far as potential upcoming titles, I would first look at all the films that have HD masters in other countries that haven't been upgraded:

This Sporting Life
The Naked City
Scenes From a Marriage
Cria Cuervos
Adventures of Antoine Doniel as well as several other Truffaut films
Malle films like Elevator to the Gallows/Fire Within/The Lovers
Thief of Bagdad
Carl Th Dreyer box set
Rosselini's War Trilogy
Knife in the Water

among others.

I still need to get through the various extras. I started the commentary last night, but only made it about 1/3 of the way through before I just needed sleep. I'm so glad I got this.
This is one of my very favorite recent releases! It looks great, and I'm also very glad I got this.

The Naked Prey and Pickup on South Street have had Blu-ray releases from MOC for what feels like forever.

Criterion has no sense of urgency about upgrades, it seems, even when HD masters are available.

My pic doesn't capture the colors very well, but in real life, it's pretty close to the actual images.

I ended up having to reprint the Night and the City image with a border so the frame wouldn't cut off any of the picture.

All in all, not bad for an at-home printer and $3 Walmart frames.

Same for Thieves Highway from Arrow, which I fully expected to be released this year. Another two from MoC that have been out for years are The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, and Passion of Joan of Arc. I'm really surprised the latter hasn't come out yet.

What size are your prints?
I'm getting several covers from CineMaterial and printing online. I was planning on doing 11x14 with background mats. The frames are on Amazon for about $14 each.

8.5x11 with a border to accommodate an 8.5x11 frame (so the frame doesn't cut off any of the actual image). Pretty small, but that's the size of the photo paper I have. My $3 frames are nothing special, but they're the right look and get the job done. They come in silver too, I think, but I prefer black.
