Somewhat relevant. A must for any Malick fan.

While the director has enjoyed the freedom that comes from this mode of production, he claims to be gravitating back toward working with clear scripts and pre-planned productions. (He recently finished shooting his WWII drama, Radegund, in Europe.) Malick does not see this as an imposition on his creativity, but, in fact, a better enabling factor: it is easier and more productive to go off the rails, he says, when rails are in place to begin with.

I need to dig into the supplements of this stacked release to get a better appreciation for it. I consider every other project of Lynch's I've seen to be masterful. Maybe this one just isn't my cup of tea.

Any similar reactions to this film?
Watch it again in 6 months at 3 am with all the lights off, and there's a chance you'll love it.

I've gone through all of my James Bond 007 Blu-rays at least twice. I've also revisited the first few Friday the 13th films multiple times (just to keep things classy, with all of the lowbrow cinema discussion that goes on around here).

As far as Criterion fare goes, I've watched In a Lonely Place three times since I bought it only a few months ago. I've revisited The Night of the Hunter, Paris, Texas, Le Cercle Rouge, Army of Shadows, The Vanishing, Insomnia, Gilda, Kiss Me Deadly, The Killing, The Killers, Letter Never Sent, Seven Samurai, and several others as well.

I might or might not have watched The Pom Pom Girls and The Beach Girls more than once.
just curious though... are those all of the titles you have watched multiple times or are there more?

There are a lot more in my collection that I have watched more than once. Sometimes, I just have a hankering to watch a familiar movie again while ignoring my stack of still-unwatched titles.

Another example, of course, would be the Star Wars films. I revisited all of my Blu-rays before The Force Awakens came out last year, and I'm sure that I'll revisit them all again before Rogue One comes out in December.

I think that it's very risky of him to go back to that well. To me, that film is the perfect representation of his style, where the meditative surrealist voiceover/editing meets a compelling narrative. I feel like he would need to 'tame' things a bit to make another corker like that considering the direction he went with his work afterwards.

I'm interested, but there sure isn't much out there.
I think everything but City Of Sadness and Daughter of The Nile is readily available in English friendly dvd or blu.

Trying to rip off Criterions artwork a little... haha

-

Grr, I am going to have to give up collecting Criterions atm.... I really can't afford the £24-£30 price tag on eBay atm... INSANE amount! :/

Hope they start doing more than 2 releases a month in UK... and bring their 50% sale here XD.

Thank you for that. A fascinating read. What I wouldn't give to have been there.

I'd say that the Criterions I watch the most -- lately anyways -- are the films from the Whit Stillman trilogy (love those), Umbrellas of Cherbourg (always been one of my favorites), Mulholland Dr. ('nuff said), and Frances Ha (love Greta's performance). Though I think that Cat People is going to join that quickly. And as I said before, I used to be totally addicted to In the Mood for Love.
Out 1 isn't Criterion, though.

I absolutely hated Eraserhead...On the other hand I absolutely love Mulhullond Dr...These 2 films in criterion collection (blu-ray) have the most extreme reaction from me, which are made by same director...

In fact, I liked the first 10 mins or so of Eraserhead...Then it slowly went downhill,
[Show spoiler]I could not bear it since the chicken scene at dinner table

Watched #3 & #4...Very good, but #1 & #2 were better...Now, I need to decide whether to watch long version of #5 & #6 first or continue with short version...I thought of watching the longer version first, but now having 2nd thoughts...

Watch the shorter versions first. They were meant to be part of Dekalog as a whole. The stand-alone films are different, and #6 even has a completely different (and not as satisfying IMO) ending that doesn't really "mesh" as well with the 10-part series.

I have a non-list opinion question for you guys...

For you, what films in the CC improve with every re-watch?

Thief, Frances Ha, High and Low, Blow Out, and Eraserhead seem to resonate with me more on each watch.

My 2016 resolution was to watch 200 first-watch Criterions. I'm down to 42 more for the remainder of the year.
So, no re-watches for me...at least until 2017.

Received Dekalog, Clouds of Sils Maria, and Summer With Monika today.

Unfortunately, I have some stupid stuff I need to do. I can't wait to get back and dig in.
