Hopefully, they are doing new 4K transfers of all those films for a box set
If they have a deal with Sony they probably have 2046 as well.

And let's not forget that Fallen Angels and Happy Together have long been OOP, suggesting that Kino has lost the rights to the films.

Can anyone give their opinions on the Zatôichi films? Are they carefully made films, or your standard Japanese Sword and Sandel film?
What do mean by carefully?

Please don't insult me for asking this but why can't Criterion use the 2 disc Blu Ray/2 disc DVD format? That way the 1 disc has enough space for the best AV possible and the other has all the extras. Is it possible or economics have to be in account?

I ask this because the films have begin to have a lot of artifacts in the video area, like macroblocking. I attribute that to the need for extras on the same disc.

I have watched 8 episodes till now...

How is his 'Blind Chance'? Anybody here thinks it's great? His Best?
After Three Colors, Double Life & Dekalog, I feel I should have all his films available in criterion blu.

Criterion have in the past used 2-BD releases, like with Seven Samurai, On The Waterfront, Night of The Hunter, Battle of Algiers etc. These usually cost more than the 1-BD releases (about 25$ at 50% off sales) because they are more expensive to produce.
That decision of 1 or 2-BD release boils down to how much total content is required to be encoded, and from what source. Yes, in recent times, there has been criticism of some of their releases for non-optimal encoding. Not sure if it's always related to extras. As David Mackenzie, who has done tons of work for various labels like Arrow, Mondo Macabro, Eureka etc has said, filesizes are not the whole story, what really matters is that the person doing the video compression properly analyzes the content and decides how much space / bit-rate to allocate (and personally verifies the results).

Woke up with the worst Criterion spending spree hangovers.

Nearly Ł200 emptied from my bank.

Yeah I saw people complaining about Lone Wolf & Cub having 3 films per disc... but the discs are large enough and as you said the person who does the compression should know what they are ending so shouldn't be an issue.

Ok, that makes sense. It seems that Arrow does the same that Criterion does but their encoding is far better.

I love Criterion. They're my film school. It's just I use a projector and with that size, I can see those anomalies up close in motion. I'm not judging it on caps-a-holic. I actually own these releases.

There has been a noticeable step up in encoding this year. Most the ones that some people have said have had noticeable encoding issues are from the previous 2 yrs or so (and some of those are high bitrate so its's not necessarily a space issue).

Ordered 2 Blu-rays to start me off. The sale lasts the entire month - why are people rushing to get multiple titles all at once? One or two a week works just fine

Just a heads-up for those subscribed. It looks like Hulu will be losing some, if not all, of their Criterion library in one week. Then Filmstruck will be the exclusive streaming service for the catalog (the service went live yesterday).

Ordered 12 Criterion Blu-ray yesterday.

- Charade
- Badlands
- My Darling Clementine
- The Friends of Eddie Coyle
- Downhill Racer
- Gilda
- Only Angels Have Wings
- Phoenix
- In a Lonely Place
- A Touch of Zen
- The Game
- One-Eyed Jacks
(Release Date: 11/22/2016)

And also pre-ordered on August 16, 2016 a criterion blu-ray title that's coming next week from amazon.com (Great price, $39.99)

- Lone Wolf and Cub (Release Date: 11/8/2016)

I think that's enough fun for one day and the rest of the year for me and Criterion.

Next year I will start with a Criterion Blu-ray.......

- His Girl Friday (Release Date: 1/10/2017)

Regards,
