Yeah I'm region A with no region free player :[ but also the source material would not make for such a drastic improvement over the DVD so its all good.

In that vein...I streamed "Tokyo Story" this morning. I can see where Ozu got his inspiration for this film. "Make Way For Tomorrow", but Ozu put a different slant on the premise of the story.

These are the next two titles that I'm considering...the first is a BFI title and the latter is an MoC, which is supposed to release in Oct. I know Tokyo Story is locked, but no word yet about MWFT.

I watched that a couple days ago......and honestly....I was not that impressed. That was my first Ozu, does anyone have some recommendations of the next Ozu for me to watch?

If you have NetFlix..."Late Spring" is streamable. I haven't seen it yet, but might check it out later today.

Hey CG...

Machine Gun McCain review:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Machi.../11392/#Review

EDIT: I just read the review...I might have found my "immediate gratification" for a missed birthday treat

I might go there later...they will probably have it.

Wound up blowing out my back yesterday...on my friggin' birthday yet!
I think it's the culmination of lots of bending, lifting, etc.this summer. Sucks to get old...

I'll let you know if I see MGM at B & N later.

Has anyone seen any films by Abbas Kiarostami other than Criterion's Close-Up?

just finished Wings of Desire and i couldnt get into it. I thought the shots of Berlin were beautiful and some of the dialogue was amazing but everything else was dry.

I forgot that. But yes it is. Any out of the collection that anyone has seen? I am hoping Criterion picks up more.

Wow... just got back from seeing The Last Exorcism at the theatre. Time to pop in a Criterion film to wash out the bad taste from that nonsense.

That's an understatement. The film I went to was >80% kids under 21 since the film was somehow rated PG-13. Usually crappy horror films like this one are loved by that demographic but by the time the movie ended most people were booing and the whole way out people were muttering how much it sucked. Thankfully I have a nice library of good movies at home to get that "film" out of my system.

I've only been to the cinemas 1 time this year, for Inception (which I don't really care for now after it settled in.). Every year I keep thinking Hollywood can't get any worse.........yeah right. Usually there is a comedy or 2 that is very funny that I go to see just to get out of the house, but there hasn't been crap this year. Nothing.

I'm with you. The past few years seem to be the worst I've seen for Hollywood. They have produced a few real gems but it seems the majority of films I see at the cinema I leave disappointed. I find myself going to the cinema less and less these days.

I know I will be going for some future movies over the next 2 years (The new Paul Thomas Anderson film, whenever that can get started), but I just feel no hope for Hollywood in the near future.

Funny with the BBS/New Hollywood set coming out, I read an article the other day about Hollywood needing a new "cleaning" or revolution of young talent, like the New Hollywood era did. Boy do we need it, but today Studios have been playing it "safe" more than ever, so I don't see them taking big chances in something like that, if they can't even take small chances.

One day Hollywood will run out of comic adaptations, things to remake, or people will stop going to go see sequels upon sequels. One day. It's crazy. They are rebooting comic book films made a couple years ago (Spider-man, Fantastic Four). I mean really? No one should go see them to take a stand. They are just making these films because they believe it brings the most money. If we don't pay for them, they will stop making them.

"If they build it, DON'T COME!"

I also saw "The Last Exorcism" and I greatly enjoyed it. I found it to be well acted and well paced. I don't think the "shaky cam" previews nor using Eli Roth to sell it help the film in anyway because it's not that kind of film. Had some genuine creepy moments, an ending that I wish went on a bit longer, and from what I could tell no CGI at all, which for anything remotely "horror" nowadays not to be CGI'd to death is amazing.

I actually prefer some of the lesser critically acclaimed Ozu films to the more acclaimed ones - I would rate Floating Weeds and Flavour of Green Tea over Rice over Late Spring and Early Summer.

An Autumn Afternoon is really good too.

Thanks for the suggestions charnier!

I've added those available to my NetFlix queue...I have to finish streaming Late Spring today.
