I might have been too tired when I watched The Innocents, but when I did see it, it just didn't meet my expectations. I found it pretty dull.

Don't Look Now is CP's equal, for me. Different films stylistically, but I enjoyed them about the same.

What had piqued my interest w/ Cat People was what people were saying about how economical the use of horror is in the film. Just a personal preference of mine, but, in general, I much prefer a film that is grounded and does more with less. ...and like I said in my previous post, the fact that the film doesn't come off as completely silly is quite an achievement.

The little bit of score that is in the film is also effectively used. It reminded me of Hitchcock. I was also able to see where modern films might have taken their cue from Cat People. I thought of A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

I see what you're saying but I DID find it campy. Very campy. I thought the acting was just universally bad. It wasn't even remotely scary even in it's two key tense scenes. The acting by the female lead was particularly bad, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the guy saw in her. I wanted to like it, and usually like films of this nature, but nothing seemed convincing here.

This was my main problem as well. Not sure why it took marrying
[Show spoiler]a bland nutcase for him to realize that he was obviously in love with his co-worker all along.

I might have said this some time ages ago, but I don't know that in my adult life I've ever really been scared while watching a film. With that said, I admired the heck out of the first scene that you reference above even if it didn't exactly frighten me.

I thought the acting was fine and maybe even good for the part of the female co-worker. Her presence elevated the film for me. At the 31 minute mark, I did find it a bit uninteresting, but it kinda took off at the right time.

ha ha! very true.
[Show spoiler]especially considering the co-worker was really darn
pretty.

You can very easily call the male lead a "dip." who marries a woman who you haven't even kissed?!
I was able to look past it though.

I just sold Day For Night and The Killers in order to subsidize my Lone Wolf and Cub purchase.

...that's two more I'm going to have to buy back in July.

I don't think this picture that Criterion posted on Sunday has been posted in this thread:

I ordered Lone Wolf which I like ok, but I'd never trade Day for Night or The Killers for the set one for one in a vacuum. This includes The Killers TV version co starring Ronnie Reagan.

My brother just showed me Paths of Glory this weekend.

Damn.

I like Kubrick, but this movie was not on my radar at all (too many other movies to see first, right?). Suddenly I have a new movie my my top three Kubricks: Dr. Strangelove, Barry Lyndon, and Paths of Glory.

This movie transitions styles so effortlessly and performs them all beautifully. Such a powerful film.
[Show spoiler]That execution scene... just rip my heart out, Kubrick!

Slightly heavy handed at times, but it really only adds to the emotion. Now I have to add another film to my wish list! Gah!

I don't disagree with you.

As it stands now, the bulk of my July purchases will be comprised of titles I sold in November. Then I'll be selling the titles I bought this month in order to buy back the titles I sold this month in order to buy the titles I'll be selling in July.

In essence, I've created my own personal Ponzi Scheme.

As the coupon status at Barnes and Noble becomes increasingly unfavorable, the system will eventually collapse under the weight of its own iniquity and the grocery clerk will come to collect his bill.

At that point I will have no other option but to sell off the entire collection and move to Cambodia to seek employment in the entertainment industy.

But I promise you one thing, I'll never give up.

...I won't ever give up.

Ray,

You clearly didn't like a particular film enough if you sold it. No point in purchasing them again.

there's a Jimmy Stewart quote near the end of Vertigo that my wife and I always repeat when cleaning house and asking each other if something can be thrown out.

it is particular funny (to me, at least) because it is always repeated by us applying the Jimmy Stewart voice:

"you shouldn't have been so sentimental."

so, I agree... holding onto films that you kind of maybe like is some form of sentimentality. no point. don't be so sentimental, Ray. kick those titles to the curb.
