Got my order of L'Avventura and Don't Look Now today. I've only see L'Avventura once about a decade ago. So happy to experience it again. Somehow have never seen Don't Look Now. Super excited to finally see it.

Discouraging people from buying Blurays is antithetical to the theme of this site, my man.

Nah - He sold it with the intention of buying it back, which just means he knew is he didn't want to watch it again immediately. I get it. There are few movies I watch twice in a year.

I am too lazy to go through the trouble he is though, and I'm confused how it doesn't work out with him behind.

I have done that before, but... only because it was OOP and I could benefit from it, buying another edition that is way cheaper .

Faintly Criterion-related, since it's Richard Linklater, and since, as such, it has a chance of hitting the Collection someday...

I just finished watching my Paramount Blu-ray of Everybody Wants Some!!

Everybody Wants Some!! is Richard Linklater's "spiritual sequel" to Dazed and Confused, and while it does not make as much of an innovative splash as that film did, it still succeeds at being a fun on-the-fly view into the lives of several diverse, likable, and well-defined characters. The film follows the antics of baseball players at a Texas college in 1980 as they party at their team house before the start of classes. Since I was born in 1972 and have a decent memory of the time period, I appreciated the authentic look and feel of this movie. When most people think of the 1980s, they remember parachute pants, small cars, synth-pop music, and MTV, but few films shed a light on that short transitional time window of 1980, between the 1970s rock/disco/punk era and the colorful "big '80s" vibe that showed up a few years later. 1980 was a time of big automobiles, tight T-shirts on guys, long hair, and a few holdover hippie types. The 1982 film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High depicts a similar world, and this movie has the same sort of fun spirit. The music soundtrack is spot-on, and, like in Dazed and Confused, the tunes help make the film.

I don't see it going into the Collection any time soon, but it's definitely worth seeing.

In essence, I've created my own personal Ponzi Scheme.

As the coupon status at Barnes and Noble becomes increasingly unfavorable, the system will eventually collapse under the weight of its own iniquity and the grocery clerk will come to collect his bill.

At that point I will have no other option but to sell off the entire collection and move to Cambodia to seek employment in the entertainment industy.

But I promise you one thing, I'll never give up.

...I won't ever give up.
No Ray, don't move to Cambodia seeking employment in the entertainment industry. Maybe you could have pulled it off 10, 15 years ago. A little experience can be overcome in most places, but in Cambodia? That's a 'fresh' only market.

Agreed. I wrote to him a few years back and he kindly signed (both in English and Japanese) a Kagemusha and Yojimbo mini poster for me. He also included a signed photo from one of his stage shows and a letter thanking me for writing to him. Interestingly he spelt the English version of his surname wrong (dropped a letter) on the stage show photo.

There's a few Criterion lightning deals today. Paris Belongs to Us is another active. Later, The Long Day Closes, Pickpocket, and Kid with a Bike will also be lightning deals.

Loved Dazed and Confused. Disliked Everybody Wants Some. Probably Linklaters weakest film.

I think later in the day they're doing a Jellyfish Eyes/Tiny Furniture combo pack.

Linklater is one of my all time favorites, but I could barely get through Dazed and Confused. I can't imagine that Everybody Wants Some would be up my alley.

Everybody Wants Some!! is basically Dazed and Confused with even better music.

It doesn't reverberate quite as much as Dazed and Confused, as I mentioned in my review, but that might mainly be due to the fact that the loose narrative style seemed more innovative back in 1993.
