Are there any Criterion releases that are very similar to the Lone Wolf and Cub series in tone? I have Lady Snowblood and have seen Throne of Blood and Yojimbo (this one had very different feel to it). Any suggestions while the B&N sale is going would be greatly appreciated.

Three Outlaw Samurai is pretty rad and real cheap too. Harakiri is also a personal favorite of mine I would recommend.

Three Outlaw Samurai is very good and also a lot of fun. It's heavier on swordplay and character and not so much on story or serious character development or introspection. In that sense it seems very much in the Snowblood spirit.

Harakiri is a fantastic film. Its very dark and very character oriented. I've compared it in the past to The Searchers in the way it takes cherished aspects of the samurai mythology and turns them on their heads.

Sword of Doom is another really good film that takes a more Snowblood approach to the way it doles out character and swordplay. In a way, it brings the John Ford > Kurosawa > Sergio Leone evolution full circle by creating a Man With No Name character in the samurai world.

All of that said, I haven't seen Lone Wolf yet so...well, I dunno how any of this applied to the original question

I will also second Sword of Doom, just for the fight scene at the end alone which is better than anything in Lone Wolf and Cub in my opinion.

I was prepared to like Sword of Doom but it really hooked me.

And yeah, that finale was awesome.
[Show spoiler]I can see why the ultimate end is unsatisfying to some (I would have loved for the sequels to have materialized) but even though it wound up being a one-off, the Man With No Name (maybe) riding off to an uncertain future still really worked for me.

i love all the criterion samurai stuff, but the only one that is somewhat comparable to LW&C would be Lady Snowblood.

I have grown to really love Sword of Doom though. Every time i watch it i appreciate it more.

(although i don't see his character as similar to "the man with no name" at all. he is literally a villain, not an anti-hero.)

True, but I never got the sense that we're really meant to root against him. He doesn't have quite the moral ambiguity of a Tony Soprano (who, David Chase's protestations notwithstanding, we're meant to cheer unapologetically for) but it's still there.

I've only watched it once so my impressions are still subject to change but I definitely see a similar nobility/outlaw mix even though the exact proportions might be balanced differently.

Great, thanks much for the suggestions. Three Outlaw Samurai doesn't seem to be on the B&N site, but going to pick up Sword of Doom and Harakiri on the way home.

Will have to pick up TOS off of Amazon sometime soon.

I had never seen the Lo e Wolf and Cub movies, but was a fan of the manga. Loved the movies!

I tried to cancel mine Tuesday night since it hadn't shipped yet and got a message stating they couldn't cancel it because it was "preparing to ship".

Still hasn't shipped.

Could just let it ship and then sell later on? seeing as you got a massive discount you would make a little money..

Good to know I'm not the only one. Thanks. happened once before where they shipped two weeks after release. When I contacted them that time they were beyond useless (which is unusual for Amazon CS). I would cancel and reorder but yeah, price locked in is worth waiting a little longer for.

Not sure if this has been mentioned. (I tried to find if mention was made, sorry of it is old news.)

Janus films reports a restored 2K print of L'argent opening this week in NYC.

Probably a Criterion release next year.

Everytime I contact them about an order of an in stock item that isn't shipping they tell me if I was prime member I wouldn't have this problem.

They are really pushing prime and cutting the service to non-prime purchasers. It's the releases they only allow prime members to buy that really get to me. Being an international customer I have no choice but to shop elsewhere for those. They are risking the huge international market as they get more aggressive with prime exclusivity.

Definitely! Always enjoy doing and reading these even though I sometimes have to skip categories.

I appreciate all the work you do on them, too.
