That's how I would treat those titles as well. The "À" in À Nous la Liberté is a preposition, rather than an article, so it should not be recessed.

I do recess foreign-language articles (last time I looked at an MLA style sheet, foreign-language articles were not supposed to be recessed in an otherwise English-language list), so Das Boot would be alphabetized under "B". The only exceptions would be if the article was part of a proper noun, so Le Mans would be alphabetized under "L".

Had to highlight The Hill because I couldn't read the yellow font, but I agree that it's a fantastic movie, well deserving of a release.

My only problem is, not only are most of the Criterion titles I own blind buys, most are still unwatched. Is anyone else in this situation?
Definitely. I haven't watched the films from the last B&N Criterion sale even though I got at least one that I was telling myself I'd be watching it the day it was delivered. Maybe now that cooler weather is coming I'll be home more so I can get those watched.
Meanwhile...I'm pondering possible choices for this sale. Some are probably going to be blind buys. I just can't decide which ones I think I must have. I try to limit myself to 5.

Yep. Golf season is essentially over as I live in Michigan (though we are going to get one final round in Tuesday). There are no sports I watch this time of year really, except for some college football; but that's extremely different than watching the Tigers every single night practically during the baseball season. It's cold enough that I don't want to go out any more than I have to.

So, it's Blu-ray Season now!

Anybody enjoying Dekalog? I'm halfway through, and each episode so far is amazing. Dekalog 5 was particularly devastating.

I can tell they were rewraps because all of the movies I received with the blue sticker still on were flawless inside and out. This is unnacptable, if your going to ship out rewrapped copies at least replace the cases.
I went in to B&N to pick up Three Outlaw Samurai and it was clearly a rewrap and the sleeve was torn under the intact wrap. Fortunately, the local B&N movie staff are great and, on noting my disappointment, said that I could take the one with the damaged sleeve and exchange it for another copy in a couple days when it arrived.

Out of the last 5 Criterion I have purchased, 2 from B&N and 1 from Amazon appeared to be rewraps. The one from Amazon had half of the teeth in the hub broken and the BD was just sliding around in the case and the booklet was beat up I picked up a used copy of Island of the Lost Souls at Half Price Books yesterday using a 40% off coupon and that was in better shape...

Just received Altman's '3 Women' from wowHD and same thing - no blue sticker, slight damage to cover sheet.

Lightbulb My Christmas Letter to Criterion

Dear Criterion,

For Christmas, I would like to have an announcement for another collection. I have never seen any of the movies made by the director Hou Hsiao-Hsien. I have read a lot of interesting data about this director and I have a great desire to see his films. I was scrolling through the tspdt.com (http://theyshootpictures.com/houhsiaohsien.htm) website and these are his films that are listed in their top two-thousand films of all time (with their ranking number in parenthesis.)

1989 A City of Sadness (163)
1985 The Time to Live and the Time to Die (310)
1993 The Puppetmaster (325)
1998 Flowers of Shanghai (485)
1987 Dust in the Wind (859)
1996 Goodbye South, Goodbye (992)
1983 The Boys from Fengkuei (1041)
2001 Millennium Mambo (1482)
2003 Cafe Lumière (1630)
1995 Good Men, Good Women (1831)
2005 Three Times (1966)

I think that they would make a lovely addition and I would be more than willing to blind buy.

Sincerely,
mrjohnnyb

My copy of Rosemary's Baby arrived with a broken case, torn booklet, and the disc was loose on the inside. B&N better swap it.

Hey gang, I have a 20% off member coupon at Barnes & Noble that I'm not going to be using. It's not good for Criterions, unfortunately, but should you use it for another movie to go with your Criterion buys, it should work like Kool and the Gang. I'd rather these go to the members of our discussion group, as y'all are like family (said in a heavily Southern accent that I don't have).

Code is claimed.

If you claim it, please make a post that you're taking it, so there's no confusion. I'll check back later tonight to remove the code once it's been grabbed up.

It's completely unacceptable. Contact B&N customer service on the phone, have your packing slip in hand, and demand they exchange them.

1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665)

They should ship to your local store for pick up, where you can examine them before accepting the trade.

Not until I buy it closer to the end of the month.

Keep rubbing it in, Phil. My own darned fault for spending so much money of late, like a dummy.

That's strange. I have never received a rewrap that I'm aware of. No torn booklets, cracked cases etc. on a Criterion.

In the summer I purchased a set of 5 replacements cases from Criterion. Due to receiving a cracked case of 8 1/2 from the Barnes and Noble sale. They ended up giving a credit of $5 for the inconvenience. I didn't think that I'd have to use any from the Criterion Flash sale, but ended up replacing the cases for The 39 Steps and Rosemary's Baby.

You got lucky, because the coupon says right on it not good towards Criterion blu-rays and DVDs.

All great choices. Especially The Hill and The Insider (or anything else from Mann).

And speaking of Lumet, would absolutely love to see Running on Empty in the Collection.
