In my opinion, Toshiro Mifune's best outing is The Samurai Trilogy. He owns every moment of the three films as we see him grow from rogue to master swordsman to facing down his greatest challenge, which cannot be solved with a sword. Whoever hasn't added it to their collection already is really missing out. It is epic.

Just got my mind blown from seeing Arrival in the theater earlier tonight. Man, this is a thinking man's sci fi movie! The soundtrack alone is amazing. It's like art house cinema and big epic special effects combined into a very unique sci fi film. It stands right alongside Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Day the Earth Stood Still (as well as Contact and maybe even Under the Skin) for intelligent, stylish sci fi. I could see a film like this in the Criterion Collection for sure. If Terrence Malick were to ever create a science fiction film, then THIS IS IT. (Even though the director was Denis Villeneuve, who takes after Luc Besson slightly)

Arrival is not the same as The Arrival (1996), which is another very underrated sci fi film in my opinion.

I can't wait to see it. But the fact that you say if Malick were to make a sci-fi-, this would be it, that ... I'm looking foir the word ... damn, can't find it. But that makes me very excited. I go to the theater so rarely these days, I usually try to make a double feature out of it. So I think I will see this and Edge of Seventeen together, no matter how different they are. Hey, I saw The Neon Demon and The Shallows the same night too. Hehe

Awesome, I still need to see those 2 films you mentioned.

I honestly feel I just witnessed greatness on the silver screen, and a film that I've not quite really seen before anywhere else in history. The music alone is totally worth it. Try and see this on a weeknight with less people in the theater. I was fortunate to be in a mostly empty auditorium with 3 friends of mine sitting dead center in the front row of the stadium seats (with the bar in front of us).

It's worth the wait. If I could wait my entire life for this, then you could wait 5 or 6 days.

...and I know Warner has the distribution rights, but I would like to see Criterion release a blu of Kurosawa's Dreams.
Dreams, due to very early adulthood's general lack of expendable income, was the first Kurosawa film (and first Asian arthouse film in general) I ever watched. Criterion's retail pricing of $30 for most releases at the time was far out of my price range for a blind buy, so when I happened to find the Warner DVD release of this for $15 and saw it had the backing of Scorsese, I purchased it without a second thought. I have still yet to see another film whose visuals astounded me like this one, and ever since I bought my first blu-ray player, it has been on top of my wish list. Today, not only do I get to pick it up, but the Criterion Gods were kind enough to release it during a sale for me.

Mulvaney, you're an angel, and if you can hear me up there, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Funny how Amazon thinks $21.60 is a good price for Day for Night.

B&N has it set for $17.80 today if I go to BN.com, $19.88 if you aren't a member even....

How close are we to getting a BD of Onibaba on Criterion?
I would assume the answer is not close enough.

Someone mentioned it a couple pages back. I'd love to see Elevator to the Gallows get the upgrade. Takes of Hoffman too! P&P!! [emoji6]

It's been about six years for me. I fear it will be eventually released by Kino in a so-so transfer.

Yes indeed. We don't have enough. It's crazy that we only have, what, three Griffiths on bluray for example.

I'm going to see it next week! Does it have a unique soundtrack like Under the Skin has??
Being a fan of Under the Skin AND Terrence Malick, my expectations are quite high after reading your comments.

The soundtrack is out and it's amazing, it's really weird - has weird distorted vocals, reminded me of the start of Under The Skin but more like it's sung not spoken. If that makes sense.

I just noticed on the Criterion site, that if you go to the last film spine number and select next there is a listing for Cameraperson.

I saw Arrival this past weekend. The other Denis Villeneuve movies that I've seen, Prisoners and Sicario, are both good movies, but they're both missing that special something that would have made them great movies. Arrival is the Villeneuve film that comes closest to greatness. I wouldn't place it quite in the same league with Under the Skin or The Day the Earth Stood Still, but it did remind me a lot of Contact. That said, it would make a fine viewing marathon choice with any of these other movies.

The Region B release of Onibaba looks great, so I can't see why Criterion won't release it here in the States. However, the transfer for the Region B of Elevator to the Gallows is terrible, lots of crushed blacks. Whoever did the encode on that release should be fired. I think Studio Canal holds exclusive rights to Tales of Hoffman worldwide I believe. Folks, stop pinning and get a Region free player!

That's one of the films that have a Blu-ray for screenings but not a Criterion release according to the Janus Films website. The rest include:

Tampopo
Multiple Maniacs
Dragon Inn
The Goalies Anxiety at the Penalty Kick
Late Autumn
The Lower Depths(Jean Renoir-1926)
Night on Earth
