For those who've seen Arrival did anyone else noticed an odd similarity in this scene?

[Show spoiler]

I guess Villeneuve might be a Bergman fan.

HOMICIDE is one of the best films of the '90s, in my opinion. A thought provoking film that is much much deeper than just a "cop movie." It gets better on repeat viewings too, so definitely worth buying.

Revanche is also great. Not a huge fan of La haine but everyone else seems to love it. And with Paris, Texas... I think you answered yourself!

I loved La Haine. You can watch it on FilmStruck and the are lots of YouTube videos, reviews, and analysis.

For any fans of All that Jazz I've been very curious about this movie. I've been wanting to see it for a while and Im always down for a Roy Scheider film. I enjoy musicals but they aren't one of my favorite genres. Is this worth a blind buy or a rental first?

But that's a lot of stuff that I will enjoy. And at what, $6 a month? Hell, I probably lose that much per month.
Oh yeah. I don't own too many CC DVDs (just Armageddon, and The Akerman set) , so its filmstruck or bust if I want to revisit titles I used to rent at blockbuster or my college library.

I'm loving the hell out of Mubi and Fandor at the moment, so it'll be a while before I consider swapping one service for filmstruck (my bets on Netflix, but they have new releases on there every month I have interest in)

Man. I'm on too many streaming services. A grand total of 6 at the moment.

I just ordered Night Train to Munich and One-Eyed Jacks from Barnes & Noble.

This makes four titles for my total November Criterion Sale haul...

McCabe & Mrs. Miller
Pan's Labyrinth
Night Train to Munich
One-Eyed Jacks

I didn't pig out this time like I've done during past Criterion sales at Barnes & Noble, but I'm pretty happy with my Collection at this time, and I've got a ton of still-unwatched titles to catch up on next year.

I haven't ordered any yet, which is more than a little uncharacteristic.

And to put an even odder twist on things, I did order five Twilight Time titles during the SAE sale.

Talk about up being down and down being up

Once again my local B&N store came through for me, and allowed me to use my 20% off coupons. They didn't even bat an eye when I presented them, just scanned them and thanked me for my business. I made my third haul of the sale and picked up for $13.67 each:

Chimes at Midnight
The Immortal Story
Inside Llewyn Davis

My original plan was to get Punch-Drunk Love and Dreams, but the former was sold out, and there were so many copies of the latter that I figured I could get one next week, if there's a Black Friday coupon.

I ordered 13 Twilight Time titles during the SAE sale. That's one reason for my relative inactivity on the Criterion front. That and the fact that I'm pretty content with my Criterion stuff now...at least until I buy The Asphalt Jungle on day one.

Yeah, I (obviously) have a Criterion wishlist I wouldn't have minded whittling down a bit but I'm also content to wait for the first post The Asphalt Jungle/Mildred Pierce CC flash sale.

If I'm going to be paying half sans any further coupon discounts (which is fine) I might as well pay it directly to Criterion and inch closer toward my $50 reward coupon at the same time.

And it's not like I've got a shortage of unwatched stuff to tide me over.

For all my restraint during this B&N sale, I've got orders pending with SAE, that AIDS charity thing and amazon.uk as well as my already impressive pile of unwatched BDs.

And Black Friday isn't even here yet.

I'll be fine waiting for another CC flash sale

The movie is like a beautiful semibiographical poem about a choregrapher that resembles the author. I say its like a poem because there are recurrent themes and the rythm is an important element. The character is troubled by his own addiction to cigarettes, women and perfectionism. Its a very meta confession, with dialogues, monologues and excerpts of his own creations. The cinematography will make you experience how his motto the show must go on will lead him not to never abandon his lifestyle (that resembles a staged long show). Despite the sad recurrent themes, they are paired with creative, vibrant and sexual choreographies. All in all it is a very unique experience that I truly recommend, but its pretty far way from the typical musical movies like Singing in the rain, The sound of music, or West side story... I havent watched many musicals, but this one is definetly on top of them.
Great thanks a lot.

I know some of you already watched all the episodes in the Dekalog, but I am doing a marathon and found this amazing series of articles if anyone want's to read a little more after watching each episode:

https://thinkchristian.reframemedia....-the-decalogue

It's from a Christian site but the starter of the series was Josh Larsen from the Filmspotting podcast.

As for my quick thoughts so far, I am not in any way a religious person, but so far up to chapter 4, these films fit perfectly with the themes of other Kieslowski films I have seen, I have a hard time knowing which are exactly the 10 commandments these films are supposed to be about but I don't think that matters that much in the end.

Chapter 1 in particular I wish that was expanded into a full feature film like the two other chapters, it has been my favorite so far.

If Criterion is getting into the James Cameron business, I could see both of them at some point.

Maybe even Avatar too, which has oddly been all but forgotten after only a few years, but it kicked off the current 3D revolution/fad.

Revisited GOOD MORNING tonight.

Absolutely a title that can use a loving upgrade. Transfer is quite lousy with absolutely no extras to speak of.

Avatar may be important technologically.

But it's one hell of an awful film, IMO. I've actually never made it through the whole thing.

If you're willing to venture beyond Criterion, the is an inexpensive BFI blu in the UK (if you're also Region B capable) as well as an English friendly Region A release in Japan.

The 20% coupons, I think, are member ones; non-members often get send 15% ones by email; but at the moment, except for some lucky members going in store, there is nothing around for coupons for the Criterion sale. Even the usually reliable BF 30% is excluded

The 50% is still a great bargain for us non-US citizens, although with the terrible exchange rate and the emergence of UK Criterions, only coupons can make the US ones a better bet. Currently most UK titles can be had in the HMV 2 for £25 deal... not going to beat that nowadays. The B&N sale with a small coupon used to match that, but not anymore
