OK, so you're breaking my heart.

Thanks a lot.

My plan of building a collection of movies starring Léa Seydoux will be a gradual process, and not a "buy all of them in one day" thing, thankfully, so I can wait indefinitely.

My enthusiasm waned somewhat when I discovered that I would have to buy a Wes Anderson movie (The Grand Budapest Hotel) to complete the collection, but my aim is still true. (Although I'll probably wait for the Criterion edition of that one as well.)

At this point, maybe a 5th anniversary edition?

See, I don't get Wes Anderson. I know lots of people love him, but I just can't get into his films for some reason. He misses my target somehow.

If you had to choose one of the following for your final purchase of the current B&N sale...which one would you choose and why?

-The Killing
-The Killers
-Brief Encounter
-Night Train To Munich

...many thanks in advance.

I think Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino have quite a bit in common, including the way people respond to them. Another similarity would be the control they seem to have over their creative visions. Their films seem completely unfiltered by any outside creative forces to the point that each one feels like exactly what the director was going for. They also wear their influences on their sleeve in a way that feels more unabashed than most. Personally, I love both and I think Rushmore is one of the best films of the nineties.

I did get them to take an additional 20% off of my Pan's Labyrinth purchase with a coupon while I was in the store earlier this month, but it took two managers and some computer wizardry for them to make it happen.

The coupons do not work at all online, but I've taken to ordering from Barnes & Noble online more often lately, because the brick-and-mortar stores have lately been short on stock with a dwindling Blu-ray count, and they've also been mistakenly posting that certain Criterion Blu-rays are in stock when the DVD incarnations of the particular movies are all that they have in the store.
I don't (and would never) question your experience, but it's so totally different from mine. The three times I've been to Barnes and Noble since this sale began, I took my blu-rays to the register, gave them my phone number to get my member discount, handed them my coupons which they scanned without any fuss or tinkering, inserted my Barnes & Noble MasterCard into the chip reader, and then waltzed out the door. None of the clerks questioned me, or hesitated, or had to do anything special to get the coupons to work. And in fact, the first time I went in, the store manager was standing right there exchanging pleasantries with me while the clerk checked me out.

Frankly, if my store ever stops accepting my coupons, I'll have to think seriously about not renewing my membership, and start placing massive orders during the Criterion.com sales instead. The ability to use the coupons is the only reason I pay $25.00 a year upfront to be a Barnes & Noble member ...

Ray,

I think The Killing might be temporarily unavailable. I think its changing over to a bluray only release.

There's still two copies left at my store.

Well, if you're going to feel compelled to buy a Wes Anderson film, that would be the best one to have.

I think The Killing was only ever released in separate blu and dvd editions.

I'd recommend The Killing purely on the basis of it including 2 Kubrick films. Haven't seen all the movies you are considering but Brief Encounter is also exceptional and moving.

That is correct. It was never a dual-format release. It was also never in a DigiPack, so it wouldn't be unavailable due to a packaging change.

If it's not available at Criterion, and they're sending people to Amazon to buy it, it's most likely that Criterion is Out of Stock, and awaiting a re-pressing, while Amazon might still have copies in stock.

That sounds likely. Here's what the Criterion website says:

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer this product for sale on Criterion.com. Please note that it is not out of print and is available at other retailers, like Amazon.com.

I went to a store in Delaware yesterday and had the same experience. I used my 20% off coupon to buy Dekalog. When the sales clerk scanned the coupon, it beeped approvingly, unlike my experience two days before in New Jersey. I was able to purchase it using the $25 gift card that I received from Barnes and Noble MasterCard, and paid for the rest with a $75 gift card I purchased two weeks ago (to get the free 10-dollar card) which was 5% off. In total, since Delaware has no sales tax, I paid $10.45 for Dekalog.

That worked out to one dollar and 4.5 cents per commandment.

The Killers...... or The Killing. I don't know! Both are worth owning, and both contain an extra movie that's decent.

The Killing. You get an extra movie with it and it's Kubrick, you can't beat that!!
