I've really been enjoying B&W films/cinematography recently, so made my last trip to the local B&N stores for this sale and picked up a bunch of titles including I Knew Her Well, The Killing, Paths of Glory, The Soft Skin, and The Seventh Seal.

Have to admit to being a little intimidated by the Bergman as I have never seen one of his films. But after reading the synopsis of each title available on BD from Criterion, it is the one I felt I might like the most. Got to start somewhere, right?

I would recommend The Killing as well, with The Killers (with Ronald Reagan's final film appearance) as a close second.

Take Night Train off the list Ray. The rest is splitting hairs IMHO. But both the movies on The Killers are at least very good so that is probably best value.

"The Killing" is better than either version of "The Killers", but both versions of "The Killers" are far better than "Killer's Kiss" IMO.

Don't forget that The Killers has Ava Gardner in her absolute prime.

The most gorgeous, man-eating vixen who ever lived imo.

Interesting.

I assumed you were only saying that out of spite.

Both movies on both discs are listed in TSHDT.com's Noir List.

Here's the question that you have to ask yourself:

Do I want to add two Kubrick films to my collection, or a Siodmak and a Siegel?

Is Killer's Kiss really that good?

Or a film that people pay attention to only because it's one of the K-man's first?

For what it's worth I've seen it about three times at this point and my interest in the film has decreased with each subsequent viewing.

Also for what it's worth, here is how I rank Kubrick (more or less). The top five is pretty definitive.

01. Eyes Wide Shut
02. 2001: A Space Odyssey
03. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
04. The Shining
05. Full Metal Jacket
06. Paths of Glory
07. Barry Lyndon
08. The Killing
09. A Clockwork Orange
10. Lolita
11. Killer's Kiss
12. Fear and Desire

Brief Encounter. To me it's the best romance film ever made.

You people are killing me with this whole The Killers versus The Killing discussion.

They're both fantastic double-feature Blu-rays that both feature excellent films noir.

I would probably go with The Killers, simply because it's more of a groundbreaking film noir in terms of the cinematography, but, man, that's a tough choice.

The Killing is my second favorite Stanley Kubrick movie after The Shining, though.

I love Kubrick, but Killer's Kiss is so so—to me. Mostly due to the story and setting. It's just not my thing. But the photography is nice.
