I have watched it three times as well. It is, by no means, one of his greatest films, but as a film aficionado, you should consider seeing Kubrick right before he reached another level in his artistry, which he did with the other film on this disc The Killing.

I had always thought of The Killing as a darn near perfect noir. It probably is, but for whatever reason I wasn't feeling it on my last watch which was my 3rd or so.

I really want to say Brief Encounter is the way to go, but I'm not sure how much I really believe that.

The Killing and Killer's Kiss is a really nice 2 for 1. If you've never seen either, then you've got yourself 3 hours plus of really good entertainment. The latter is not polished, but it has some of that Kubrick feel and a couple memorable scenes. Well worth your time.

Has anyone ever received a criterion with a slightly damaged booklet?

Also for what it's worth, here is how I rank Kubrick (more or less). The top five is pretty definitive.

01. Eyes Wide Shut
02. 2001: A Space Odyssey
03. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
04. The Shining
05. Full Metal Jacket
06. Paths of Glory
07. Barry Lyndon
08. The Killing
09. A Clockwork Orange
10. Lolita
11. Killer's Kiss
12. Fear and Desire
Nothing wrong with EWS at #1. It's number 2 or 3 for me. I just can't get it over 2001.

"Barry Lyndon" is easily a top 5 Kubrick film for me. I think it's a much better film than "Full Metal Jacket". But 100 people could submit a list of their top 10 list of Kubrick films and not many of them would be the same, as it is with many great directors.

If you buy The Killing, then make sure that you buy the Warner Bros. Blu-ray of Salem's Lot as well.

Salem's Lot features Marie Windsor and Elisha Cook, Jr. as two characters in a relationship. This casting was a deliberate nod to their roles as a couple in Stanley Kubrick's The Killing.

All the time. I'd say about 1 out of every 5 purchases.

But less often lately with the cheapo leaflets. The thicker the book the more chance of damage.

Perhaps his go-to pickup line is, "And you know there is something very important we have to do as soon as possible...F**k."

How come the thicker ones get damaged? Do you ever do anything about it? Is there anything to do about it? Sorry I'm just curious. None of mine are terrible to the point where I'd want to return but still.

They are usually superficial damages. I don't usually kick up a big fuss unless the booklet's reading condition is seriously compromised. As far as I know, I've never returned a purchase for booklet damages.

The problem with thick booklets is that sometimes those holders on the disc case either press down too hard, making an imprint on the book when it's taken out, or the book is so thick the edges bump up against the case too much and bends/rips/dinged.

That said, I do miss those old thick Criterion booklets. They often had multiple essays and interviews in them, not just one, and they often had some nice screenshots/artwork in them too.

Agreed, I'd put Barry Lyndon at the top of Kubrick's filmography.
