The Great Beauty was a blind buy for me. I loved it. Sort of a contemporary La Dolce Vita.

The jeans I'm wearing have these little pockets inside the regular pockets that couldn't fit more than a button or a pill or two. They are useless to me.

Useless as they are it's never occurred to me to replace them with another pair of jeans without those pockets.

You're not the only person I saw make the comparison, and being really into Fellini, that's what we hoped for, but it didn't come across like that to us at all! Anyway, luckily we watched it on Hulu and didn't blind buy it like we usually do with Criterions!

Well I certainly hope my inquiry motivated you to think much longer and harder about the future of your jeans collection.

Some of the sets (the digipacks) are larger, right? So if space is a concern, that might be money well spent?

If space is that big of a concern wouldn't the better solution be throwing away all the cases and keeping all the discs in a binder.

I think this is the first time I've ever heard anyone say anything positive about My Blueberry Nights...

It's a surprisingly tight little film, Spy in Black. A rep theater nearby is doing a long Powell & Pressburger retrospective, so if anyone cares to recommend other "lesser" Powell & Pressburger films, I'd love to know which ones are must see.

I've yet to see a P&P movie I didn't like - I'd be there for everything. I saw I Know Where I'm Going in a theatre last year and enjoyed it. Edge of the World, if that's included is great.

I love that little pocket! That's where I keep some spare a quarter or two, which prevents it from jiggling around in the general pocket. I also use it for ticket stubs when I go to the movie, and sorts of stuff,

This convo has made me realize I need to ensure my future jeans have that tiny pocket.

I think I'm done for this sale. There's a few more I wanted to pick up, but I'm already over my expendable income allotment for this one.

No, the better solution would be to sell off the releases that came in stupid, oversized digipacks with redundant DVDs and re-buy the blu-ray only versions in smaller, more durable plastic cases.

Looks like I made one last run to B&N this weekend and bought the Dekalog release! I paid only $40 + tax for it because I was able to use multiple discounts ($5/50 + 10% member discount). I combined this with the 30% BF coupon on a standard non-Criterion blu-ray that I got for $8.80 (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Remastered Edition) and this enabled me to use the $5 off $50 or more coupon on Dekalog. It was a brilliant move on my part I felt, as I got a full $5 off of that release plus another $4.50 off on top of that because of the 10% member discount.

I'm one happy Criterion man.

So I ended up with 4 Criterions for this November's 50% off sale, a record low for me.

I'd love a Blu, of course, but it seems like a minor Powell & Pressburger Eclipse suit would be a good place for it, too.
The Spy in Black is so much fun. Twists, double-crosses, abductions, mistaken identities, quick-witted (and sometimes euphemistic) banter and a wonderfully ironic finale. One could easily mistake it for a Hitchcock movie of that era. It’s certainly not as refined as some of their subsequent works but it also resisted the urge to peddle blatant propaganda a la 49th Parallel. Conrad Veidt’s performance has to be one of classiest of all onscreen nazi renditions. And wasn’t this like P&P’s first or second collaboration?
On a sheer enjoyment scale I’ll put it just behind Blimp. Hope this is deemed blu-worthy.

Sounds like the seeds are being sown for the first annual blu-ray.com Criterion thread jeans exchange!

Everyone post your waist and inseam measurements so we can get started.

I love my stupid, oversize digipacks - here they are on my brand new Billy bookcases:

And here's the final tally for the sale for me this time:
