And so it begins. The Catherine Deneuve Marathon.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is easily one of my favorite films ever. God, if any film yanks at your heart ...

No matter how many times I see The Umbrellas of Cherbourg -- and I've seen it enough times that I don't need subs anymore -- that last sequence just rips my heart heart out. It's terrible.

I absolutely love this film. Love the colors. Love Legrand's music -- it's crazy beautiful. Love the story. But yowza. That ending. Yeesh. And this music will stay with me for days.

I would go into some huge personal thing here, but I'd rather not. What a beautiful film. And Deneuve ... wow.

EDIT: Now onto Repulsion. What a follow up. Yikes.

Gone With The Wind, Citizen Kane, The Wizard of Oz, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Avatar, Point Break, The Terminator...even Top Gun...they all would've been better with Tom Waits.

I'm not even a big fan of the guy's music.

I just think his acting is magical.

It captures something.

...something about the essence of the human condition.

Ray, your enthusiasm for this film has decided my next Criterion blind buy for me. Despite the fact I have a transmission seal to replace and almost $1,500 worth of dental work to get done tomorrow, I am budgeting for a copy of Short Cuts during the B&N 40% off sale in December.

Anyone else getting emails from BN stating their order has been delayed? I placed this order on the first day of the sale. At first it was delayed for Punch Drunk Love. Which I understood because of how popular of a title it is even though like I said I ordered right away. Now my order has been delayed for The New World and 12 Angry Men. It's strange to me because I placed a second order a week or so later that included The Squid and the Whale and I got that order like within a few days of ordering.

I noticed on Monday that a lot of titles in my Criterion wishlist were out of stock. I had planned to upgrade my Wild Strawberries this sale but it remained OOS the whole time (just like 3:10 to Yuma in the previous sale).

Sounds like in both sales they were struggling to maintain stock levels, for whatever reason.

Yeah I mean as long as I get my order eventually that's fine I just keep worrying I'm going to get an email stating sorry unable to fulfill order or something which would obviously enrage me

Apologies if this has been posted. I saw Moonlight a week or so ago and have been listening to Jenkins interviews ever since. Very articulate and insightful guy, and it's nice to hear him address a clear influence (though I don't really see In the Mood in his film as some do.)

I need to watch this Mitzoguchi classic again. Where oh where is the Criterion release? The Eureka/MoC release is long out of print and fetches big bucks.

It seems possible but on the other hand if they had the rights back to release physical copies again you would think they would have done that already.

If you are looking for other options, you can pick up this for roughly what a copy of the Criterion blu sells for these days.

Did anyone else get a $10 gift card in the mail from B&N yesterday?
Apparently they think I've bought enough Criterions to send a special thanks.

[Show spoiler]For any Region Free Ozu fans, zavvi is running a 3 for £20 sale, which when put into your cart is actually a 3 for £12 sale. They only charge £.99 to ship an order to the states. The following Ozu releases are available in the deal:

Late Spring (with The Only Son)
An Autumn Afternoon (with A Hen in The Wind)
Late Autumn (with A Mother Should Be Loved)
Five for Ozu (dvd - Abbas Kiarostami film dedicated to Ozu)

A bunch of other BFI blus are also included. Any multiple of 3 blus in the sale discounts to £12 per grouping in a single order, all for the £.99 shipping.

Edit: Apologies as the 3 for £20/3 for £12 thing appears to have been corrected. I'll leave the info there spoilered in case it still interests anyone.

Unfortunately, I fell asleep last night after Repulsion. So I need to continue it today after my appointment with my therapist. I have many dreams to discuss with her.

But good lord, Repulsion .. I've seen that movie many times, and it's interesting to watch how Polanski uses just off camera angles to throw you off. Deneuve's performance is all-star, of course. Polanski's direction is ali-star too, though. Everything is *just* a little off. It's brilliant acting and brilliant directing all around.

Now, in a couple hours, it's The Young Girls of Rochefort, then Belle de Jour, then Donkey Skin. So, it will be a great Catherine day. Now the question becomes: Why do I only own five of her films?

Ouch.
