Can anyone say whether FilmStruck is streaming at 1080p?

Talking about this, can anyone with the subscription tell if the titles which are in English language have Closed Captions?

What about foreign movies? do they have forced subtitles (subtitles that are part of the video stream like in Hulu)?

One more, is it possible to know whether a film is HD or not from the app interface?, doesn't seem possible from the web site at least.

I watched part of The Bride Wore Black & Casque d'or, but both had the burnt-in subs. The former is not Criterion anyway, but it looks like the same master as in the TT Blu-ray, as the subs are in yellow... The latter has the option for the audio commentary, which I didn't check out but should be the same one as in the DVD.

The app does not show which film is in HD, unfortunately. Casque d'or looks HD to me, so I hope it comes out on Blu-ray from them someday!

Yeah, sure. Get them all out of the way.

Thanks, yeah Casque d'or was in HD on Hulu it looked great.

I don't understand why services like Hulu, Amazon and now Filmstruck don't give us simple information like Netflix to know when a video is in HD or not, it could be frustrating when your connection is failing for whatever reason and you can't even be sure if this is how it is supposed to look or it could look better.

Also I assume some people try to give preference to HD movies if not outright avoid SD.

Anyone here ever feel like they've hit a wall with their Criterion journey?

One of the great joys of my recent existence has been the excitement of Criterion blind buys during the B&N sales - which I can only describe as the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

The Apu Trilogy, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Hiroshima Mon Amour, World On A Wire, Three Colors:
[Show spoiler]

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, A Brighter Summer Day, Insomnia, The Devil's Backbone:
[Show spoiler]

It's been epically bittersweet...and a hell of a lot of fun.

But this last sale I struggled to put together a list of six or seven titles I wanted, most of which were upgrades. Now I'm thinking about the July sale and I can't even think of more than one or two potential blind buys that make my light saber so much as flicker, let alone switch on with its full neon-colored magnificence.

I've gone over the full blu-ray catalog five or six times in the last couple weeks...and nothing. That hog below my waist doesn't even move.

What am I going to do? Reduce myself to waiting for the occasional announcement of a title I really want? Keep sending Jon Mulvaney large packages full of pig manure in the mail until Le Samourai finally gets upgraded?

That sounds like death to me.

I'm scared.

I'm holding on too tight.

...I've lost the edge.

I remember when I finally reached the limit of the back catalogue. I've been lucky that the announcements of 2016 almost all made me excited. Though I will say 2015 left me cold and I spent very little on Criterions compared to other years.

You should be happy you caught up, though. I remember how thrilled I was when I didn't feel like I was missing titles and couldn't wait for sales.

Yes, Ray. I've gotten rid of so many lately.

The only one I plan to buy in the future is The Before Trilogy.

You should just hedge your bets and buy my DvDs for a buck each just in case they don't make it to the golden shelf.

Yeah I suppose you're right.

Sometimes it makes me sad though– the thrill of the blind buy being gone.

I have to remind myself that some Criterions aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they remain on the shelf, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice.

But still, the collection you live with is that much more gray and empty without some fresh fish.

...I guess I just miss my blind buys.

I miss being on the streets late at night, trading sexual favors for cash...trying to get that money for Dekalog. It was never fear that gripped me - only a heightened sense of things. The cold air in my lungs...the crazed look in the old man's eyes as he reached into his wallet and pulled out two crinkled $20 bills.

I've never felt more alive.

...before or since.

That's it Scottie...I'm buying Salo in July.

I don't care what happens to me.

Is your collection up to date here, Ray? You seem to have a fairly small Criterion Collection, for someone that hit a wall?

Where's your copy of il Sorpasso?

Most the movies I've streamed have not had the caption option available which for someone like me is extremely annoying as I use captions even for American English. The other most annoying part is not having a 10 second skip back or skip ahead like on HBO GO. You literally have to scrub.

Like I said, I've perused the Criterion catalog several times recently and nothing has jumped out at me.

I'm not a huge fan of comedies.

I can picture that:

, Finally got to watch that movie yesterday, it is really a fantastic film, too bad the drawing hint shows a possum because I can see how it fits perfectly if it were a rat.

Talking of the actual hint, Il Sorpasso is amazing too, but if you don't want comedy, there is also I Knew Her Well and A Special Day, all great Italian films.

Fair enough, I just feel like you have a rather small collection - there is probably more in there for you if you cast your net a little wider.

Ride The Pink Horse?
All That Heaven Allows?
Wild Strawberries?
Sweet Smell of Success?
On the Waterfront?
Fanny & Alexander?
Black Narcissus?
The Wages of Fear?
The Innocents?
My Darling Clementine?

Just a few suggestions, looking at your collection.
