Same here. I used to have an extensive book collection, and, while I've still got a few big boxes of books, I ended up giving away about 80% of them. With the exception of my Stephen King books, Ian Fleming books, Raymond Chandler books, and a few other various classics, I generally give new books to co-workers as soon as I finish reading them.

I've got about 900 to 1,000 CDs, but they all fit under my bed. I used to buy a couple of hundred CDs every year, but I only buy about four or five a year these days.

I still keep all of my medals from marathons, ultramarathons, etc., but they all go into a "memorabilia box" in my closet.

Black Narcissus vs. Gilda vs. The Innocents.

Which one is the best?

I'm going straight up viking conquerer on Scottie's collection.

And its a pain to go through all of them with the huge and nearly abstract size of covers and so little results per page. Turning only the list from the complete view into text, or fomatting it properly to fit just the titles, the year and GENRE would be a huge improvement to see who you want to spy on
You can use the list view, the one without covers.

Also you can change the settings to see up to 500 titles per page I don't remember the exact number, but it works for other people collections not just yours.

Bad news for us Assassination of Jesse James fans:

Quote:
“I don’t think Criterion are interested in it. I don’t think that they feel it’s significant enough for them,” the director told Collider. “There was this really lovely guy, who was a film student, that organized this ‘Jesse James’ revival, either last year or the year before. He was a film student or something, and ‘Jesse James’ is his favorite movie. He basically took it upon himself to create a ‘Jesse James’ revival and he set up all these screenings at various cinematheque type of things. He tried to get Criterion interested, and they weren’t.”

I know it would do one thing for sure, if the person talking has their top 10 by their name it would certainly let you know a lot about the context for their opinion. If it's all recent, or one director, or all pre 1950's etc. you would know where they are coming from more easily, plus you could find like minded folks more easily.

My favorite #1 movie would be the Wizard of Oz for example, after that it gets hard to choose though. I like to pretend I'm in a room with all movies in it that's on fire and I can only carry 10, which do I take? just to help me decide

That's really sad to hear. What a great film.

As to the collecting discussion, I don't feel anywhere near my "wall" yet. Back when I was collecting comics, at first every Wednesday was magical. I'd walk up to the store a few blocks away with a friend of mine, walk out with 15-25 new comics, and spend the next day and a half enjoying myself so much. Eventually though, I would realize that I had fallen behind on this book and that book and another book. I would keep planning on catching up, but never did. So, I just gave it up altogether eventually.

Now, I've got a load of longboxes sitting in my basement, shelves of graphic novels and Absolute Editions, and then a few piles upstairs that I still haven't gotten around to putting away. It happens. But I don't regret anything I bought.

When it comes to Blu-rays and more specifically Criterions, I'm nowhere even close to that point. Granted, as I said the other day, my un-watched pile has grown significantly. But I don't spend money on much else, really -- other than the obvious like food. I don't go out more than once every couple weeks. I might spend a bit too much on vodka, but otherwise ... not much. I can't remember the last time I went on a vacation somewhere. Etc. So money isn't an issue.

I still get excited when something new arrives. Not Criterion, but it was suggested to me in this thread: Just received Buñuel's Tristana today, starring Catherine Deneuve. And this one I will actually get to tonight, on it's day of arrival.

I'm not a huge fan of the film tbh but it sure is gorgeous and the old BD is quite underwhelming.

"Assassination of Jesse James" is a good film, but I thought "Killing Them Softly" was magnificent. Reminded me a great deal of "The Friends of Eddie Coyle". I think it's one of the better films of the last 10 years.

Both Eddie Coyle and Killing Them Softly (Cogan's Trade) are based on novels by the great George V. Higgins!

I prefer Killing Them Softly as well, but am a huge fan of both.

Oh man, you're selling some great movies. I understand the thought process behind what you're doing, and respect your desire to trim down. But wow....some of the movies you're selling off, I don't know if I could ever part with them. Do you at least have digital copies of these?

Good luck with the sale.

A few days or so ago I removed nearly 100 Blu-rays (more or less) from my collection. I'm sick of collecting and I'm only trying to keep the films and television shows that have had the biggest impact on my life.

I've been fortunate to have seen a lot of great movies but I'm tired of trying to convince myself that I love certain things much more than I do. Frankly, I'm getting far too busy and old for this shit.

Interesting. I remember looking that up when I watched "Killing Them Softly", but had totally forgotten about it. It's an amazing film. Andrew Dominik is a real talent. The bleak ending of "Killing Them Softly" is straight out of 70s cinema, which is probably why modern audiences rated the film so low coming out of the theater. I believe it had one of the lowest Cinemascore ratings of all-time, where people are asked their thoughts right after they exit the theater. It's an old-school, uncompromising film, which I love.

If I was anywhere near my wall, I took a sledgehammer to it about a week ago, and made more room. I've been buying quite a lot lately. No Criterions during the B&N sale, though, surprisingly. Lots of other stuff. A good deal from the SAE Twilight Time sale.

I caught the first half of The Assassination of Jesse James the other night before heading to the gym, and really liked what I saw. I will watch it all the way through next time I see it on.

Criterion only releases high art like JellyfishGuys and Blue is A Kool Kolor. No room for Roger Deakins photographed trash!

Trust me, I'm a film expert.

Yet another misleading title. He says he doesn't think they're interested, meaning he doesn't even have a definitive answer. He uses an anecdote about some random film student who tried to get Criterion involved in his revival of the film as proof that they're not invested in releasing it. Do you know how ****ing stupid it is to jump to conclusions based on that?

Don't all 70s films have bleak endings? I could make a list. The Friends of Eddie Coyle wasn't exactly a laugh fest.

Right, I was saying that the tone and ending of that film were reminiscent of 70s cinema.

3 more years...you will probably stop buying films... plus you will dislike watching films and moreover hate everybody (us) who watch films...

edit: make it 2...

That's too bad. One of my favorite films and the one I always think "This is what a Malick Western would look like." If Criterion isn't interested I would hope someone else would give it the release it deserves.
