So what my definition basically is.

Seriously? You've never seen a hipster wearing a fedora? It's like the cliche thing for a hipster to do and I can't think of anything more old fashioned than that.

I'll have to correct myself. Hipsters have been around for a long time, but they weren't called that until the 2000s.

Wear a fedora long enough and eventually you'll age into it!

they're not wearing the fedora because its "old fashioned". they're wearing it because its trendy (and out of mainstream). 1950s films aren't "trendy" among 20-30 year olds.

Oh, okay... I think I've figured it out.

THOSE guys. - the ones in the video are the reason why a LOT of Criterion fans won't post in this thread any more. Is that right?

OK, this is not Criterion-oriented. I get that. But SOMEONE here said I should get Tristana and I did. It was an amazing Buñuel film. I would like to thank that person. What a great film.

And if anyone can find the earliest movie that had the term "hipster" as it is used today, please name it! I'd like to know, personally.

Default re: hipsters

To me, contrarianism is the key element of being a hipster, which means hipster-type opinions will always depend on the setting.

For settings in which most people tend to watch the latest studio mega-blockbusters, the hipster would say he/she prefers older/foreign/"forgotten" films. In a setting like this thread, where we are generally pretty well-acquainted with older/foreign/"forgotten" films, the hipster opinion would be that modern movies are way better... and f*** Kubrick!

Ok fine, here is the first definition of it from Webster:

Apply that to how people use it today, and you have the google definition. Happy now?
