Looks like a mediocre release in terms of PQ and AQ.

The DVD transfer isn't great either, so I'm not surprised the PQ of this is subpar given they didn't do a 4K remaster. I'll probably upgrade at some point because I love the film so much and this will likely be the definitive release, but the PQ definitely looks underwhelming.

I'm so confused why they don't do 4K remasters for everything I'm sure it's expensive and takes a little more time but if it's an option why not just always do a 4K or at least a 2K remaster? Especially when 4K Blurays are going to be the new standard.

They mainly rely on others to do scans and restoration work. If no one has done one, then they can't license it. It would be a much large investment to do a scan and restoration of a film themselves (or through a partnership even), and who knows if it'll be worth it for this particular film.

I think they sometimes opt to using a digitally restored HD transfer (i.e. typically using a dated master) when it's a last resort. On one hand, it's quite unfortunate, but on the other, it's better than not having a BD release at all.

Boy, have I got a list. This is just my current top ten, it's only Warner titles. It does not include any MGM, Paramount or anything else they might have rights to.

* Footlight Parade:1933
* They Drive By Night:1940
* High Sierra:1941
* The Strawberry Blonde:1941
* Arsenic and Old Lace:1944
* Mister Roberts:1955
* The Spirit of St. Louis:1957
* A Face in the Crowd:1957
* Damn Yankees:1958
* Days of Wine and Roses:1962

I think that WAC would be the best place for most of these, but I think High Sierra and A Face in the Crowd would look great in a Criterion edition.

Yeah, it's frustrating. "The Exterminating Angel" is a film with a limited audience because it's so weird, so maybe they figured it wasn't worth putting the resources into a 4K remaster. It definitely sucks because unless Arrow does a 4K remaster, I can't see anyone else doing it. But the film is awesome, and at least we will have a very watchable version of it, even if it's not the best it could be.

I love Buñuel's Exterminating Angel. I'll probably grab it on the next sale. I hope Criterion also releases his two other well known films he directed in Mexico, Los Olvidados and Simon of the Desert.

Off the top of my head...

After Hours
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
The Ballad of Cable Hogue
Ride the High Country
Femme Fatale

Plus a bunch of 40s/50s noirs.

My list could go on and on...

Huh? Don't they boast about sometimes having restorations done with the director there like with Punch Drunk Love?

Plus if you watched the supplements on Blood Simple the Coens specifically congratulate Criterion on the restoration and are impressed with it and they talk about how they were able to digitally fix some mess ups

What are you confused by? You said it yourself, sometimes they do restorations themselves, sometimes in partnership with the director. Sometimes doesn't mean always. In this case, they didn't, or couldn't do one.

Just realized that the local repertory theater is playing THE PAGNOL TRILOGY in early January and they list it as a JANUS PRESENTATION, so a Criterion release for that should be fairly inevitable.

Death In Venice
Some Came Running
Fury (Fritz Lang, this one I am not sure if it was ever released by Warner)

Awesome list. To this I would add Jezebel and Femme Fatale (just going off memory).

Can we keep the argument about the exact nature of the assault performed on the set of "Last Tango In Paris" to the "Last Tango in Paris" thread please (where all of these points are already being discussed)? There are a lot of people who come to this thread for information about Criterion releases who aren't interested in reading a debate about the precise definition of rape.

At last I got around obtaining Ingmar Bergman's Autumn Sonata, and by gods what a film! Absolutely riveting performances from both Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullman. The film is now easily in my TOP 5 of Bergman, I'm thinking I have to watch it a third time this week.

Speaking of Bergman, when was the last time Criterion released something by him? Cries and Whispers early 2015? I'm in dire need of more, especially when Criterion is pretty much the only one in the business showing Bergman the love he deserves. It's pretty crazy how people in the Nordic countries hold him in god-like status, but the only film they've released on blu-ray here is the theatrical version of Fanny & Alexander.

Barnes & Nobels just sent me 8 free DVD movies today and I'm not even a member. All of the movies are mainstream Hollywood garbage, but it is the thought that counts. Maybe they felt bad about not letting me use a coupon on the $300 worth of Criterions I bought during the last sale.

Warner Bros. Criterions?

All the Warner owned Sam Peckinpah titles not currently on blu ray.
Brian De Palma's Femme Fatale (if Warner still owns the United States home video rights)
The Magnificent Ambersons
