In Germany, the film was shown on television in weekly chapters — a 90-minute opening followed by 12 one-hour chapters, and a two-hour Epilogue (14 parts in all).3 When it premiered in American theaters, it was shown either as a 15-1/2 hour marathon — which is how I saw it at Los Angeles’ Vista Theater — or in two parts, lasting roughly 7 to 8 hours each, shown on consecutive days.

Seeing it originally as a marathon, starting in the early evening and concluding sometime around noon the following day, I’ll admit I sometimes had trouble keeping my eyes open. Regardless, I was bowled over by the ambition and complexity of the work, the astounding ensemble performances...
I also found something from 1997 mentioning a 15 hour marathon screening at The Harvard Film Archive, but the link is suddenly not working for me anymore.

Ouch. Seems like the information may be best spoilered?

So, who wants to take bets on whether Criterion announces titles tomorrow or not?

I'll bet my copy of A Safe Place that Criterion announces the releases tomorrow.

Maybe a Mae West box set with the lip sofa on the cover?
Just about all of Mae West's classic films (i.e., the ones she did in the 30s/40s, not the two she did in the 70s) are Paramount films owned by Universal. The two exceptions are My Little Chickadee, which was a straight-up Universal production, and The Heat's On, which was from Columbia.

So none of them -- and specifically the pre-code ones -- would be licensed from Warner. And quite frankly, I doubt that they'd be high up in Universal's restoration queue. We just got the Marx Brothers set, and I'd think that next they'd probably give higher priority to W.C. Fields, Preston Sturges, and Bob Hope. Even then, if Universal went through the trouble of restoring them, they'd probably want to release them themselves -- as they did with the Marx Bros -- instead of licensing them out.

Or a Warren William set-Employees' Entrance, The Match King, The Mind Reader, Skyscraper Souls, etc.

It's been exactly one month since Barnes and Noble shipped my order of the Zatoichi and Lone Wolf & Cub sets and they still haven't arrived to me in Australia. Is B&N shipping always this slow?

Not always, but I have certainly had waits like that with them myself.

They probably need extensive restoration - Ive heard they have some pre-codes as well but God knows what those elements are like. Those are 70+ year old films

Surprisingly most of the ones I've seen from the Forbidden Hollywood DVD sets and those broadcast on TCM look pretty good.

To Australia yes My order from B&N in June took 3 weeks but the one placed last year in the November sale took over 5 weeks. My November order this year is yet to arrive and I'll be really lucky if it arrives before Christmas but I think it's unlikely.

As others have said, not always, but sometimes this is indeed the case for us. My current wait is similar to yours.

A couple of years ago I did a trial of the WAC streaming channel and I thought a lot of their older titles like Night Nurse and Baby Face looked pretty good. More like upscale DVDs than 4K scans, but still pretty good considering. I would love to see some of the Forbidden Hollywood stuff, or even I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang, Heroes for Sale or Red Dust, to name three.

After Hours and Lost Highway are extremely overdue for blu ray releases. Rumble Fish just got an announcement recently but I don't think it's Criterion.
