Not that this has anything to do with Criterion, but ...

I've written IMDB more than once about including the DP at the top level information, along with Director, Writer, Stars. They have yet to respond. Personally, if I were running the show, it would read:

Director:
Writer:
Director of Photography:
Music by:
Stars:

But I guess that's just me.

I figured Mark Lee Ping Bin would be in there (same goes for me), but I wasn't sure who the other one would be. If I were to compile a list of the ten most beautiful films, him and Doyle would be on it.

If you're region free, there is an inexpensive English friendly Region 3 dvd for Let The Wind Carry Me, the documentary about MLPB.

I don't watch films solely because of cinematographers, but if a great DP works with a director I like then I'm happy.

Deakins and Doyle are very good but I think Bruno Delbonnel is more interesting nowadays. Unfortunately he often works on mediocre films. His work with Sokurov is excellent, especially Faust, and Dark Shadows, while a relatively poor film, is one of the better looking would be blockbusters of the recent past. He is good at making colourful and muddy looking films that require a delicate balance of the elements.

Slightly off topic, but "Criterion-adjacent".

I just picked up the new Cohen Film Collection edition of Howards End. Haven't watched it all the way through, but spot checked it. My impressions...

It certainly wasn't the improvement over the Criterion BD that I was expecting from a new 4K restoration. The picture isn't as soft as the Criterion, and the colors are a little better defined, but it's not like day after night. It appears to have all of the extras that were on the Criterion, except for "The Wandering Company", a documentary on Merchant Ivory. And there are some extras that Criterion doesn't have: two interviews and a commentary. This time around, the extras are relegated to a second disc.

The real oddity is that the picture is slightly wider. The Criterion is at the expected aspect ratio of 2.35:1, but the Cohen is at around 2.50:1. I haven't noticed any obvious differences in the image because of this. I do have to say that I freaked out at first when I saw the info on the slipcase, which say "16x9 1.78 FF", but it's (thankfully) erroneous. First time I've ever seen an aspect ratio listed on a Cohen release, and it was wrong.

If you missed out on the Criterion edition after it went OOP, here's your chance to pick up a great copy of a great film. But there's no compelling reason to upgrade if you have a copy of the Criterion already.

jay, just and FYI if you didn't already know, Cohen will be fixing the AR, it was an error.

Haven't heard it mentioned on here so wanted to pass along --

Right now Barnes & Noble is having a 40% off Blu-ray sale, running thru December 24. Picked up Black Narcissus, Anatomy of a Murder, and David Lean Directs Noel Coward.

Is a film on Film Struck a solid indicator that a future Criterion is coming? Cause I noticed ADAPTATION is on there and a Criterion of that would be heavenly.

How about a little confirmation that Criterion/Janus has Wong Kar-wai's films. According to this twitter exchange between Aaron Stewart-Ahn and C. Mason Wells, Criterion/Janus "basically have all of" Wong Kar-wai's films.

Again, I figure they definitely have everything from Chungking Express to In the Mood for Love or, if Sony's rights have expired, 2046 (Although Criterion would have no problem licensing it from Sony if they still have it.) The two post-2046 films are still with the Weinsteins, so the only real question is the status of As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild

There are plenty of actors Van Sant could have cast if he wanted an angrier, nastier Norman. Just not Vaughn.
Vince Vaughn's entire onscreen persona is definitely that of a confident, flippant smart-ass. He just can't pull off the neurotic mama's boy that Perkins could, and seeing as Van Sant's film is meant to be a carbon copy of the original, you kind of need that performance to work. There were other poor casting choices in that film too though, having Rita Wilson play Marion's co-worker kind of defeats the purpose of the joke in that scene about the oilman noticing her wedding ring. In the original the character is meant to be oblivious to her own homeliness (played by Hitchcock's own daughter!), not a label one can really apply to Ms. Wilson.

The Psycho remake was ultimately pointless and shouldn't have been filmed. Perhaps they should have made it a black comedy and cast Crispin Glover as Norman.
