The Psycho remake works as a thesis statement of sorts, which going by Gus Van Sant's interviews seems to be his intention, so I wouldn't deem it as pointless. A disaster to watch, certainly, but that's kind of proves its point.

I posted this on Criterion's FB page, but I'd love to see them release a set featuring the films of Carlos Enrique Taboada. I'm not a Guillermo Del Toro fan at all, but, since Criterion clearly thinks highly of him, why not an interest in one of his cited influences (not to mention, a far superior filmmaker)? His work deserves to be properly released. One of the few labels I can see considering it given the overall lack of interest in older Mexican horror films.

I'm also still tightly crossing my fingers that the Warner deal will lead to The Rapture in 2017.

Are any of his films with studios that Criterion works with? I see a couple are with Lionsgate, so those are out. There's a lot of factors that go into Criterion acquiring films.

As for The Rapture, that's not really Criterion material.

It's a good excuse I suppose, passing a bad film off as a kind of po-mo exercise, but it doesn't let him off the hook. The joke is that he has made even worse films than Psycho (1998). e.g Even Cowgirls Get The Blues and his most recent effort.

Excuses for what? You speak in objective terms, rejecting perspective and acknowledgement. Intentions are always relevant, whether you believe them to be successful or not.

At this point hasn't Van Sant made more bad films than great ?

I'm a big fan of Taboada too, I've got copies of 5 or 6 of his movies & they are all terrific!

Absolutely. Just an incredibly consistent body of work. I had to shake my head when I saw the cheap-looking remake of Blacker than the Night pop up at Redbox. I looked it up online and learned that Even the Wind is Afraid had also been remade a few years earlier. Of course, these got picked up for distribution in the U.S. (albeit DVD only) while the originals languish. Poison for the Fairies is the only one that got any kind of release here with subtitles.

Nice to see recognition of this Mexican director, I thought I was the only one here who have seen his movies.

Though it appears he has made several more movies, only 4 are somehow famous at least in Mexico:

Hasta el Viento tiene Miedo (Even the Wind Is Afraid)
El Libro de Piedra (The Book of Stone)
Mas Negro que la Noche (Blacker than Night)
Veneno para las Hadas (Poison for the Fairies)

All except the last one have received poor remakes.

They need to hurry up and release Samurai Rebellion already .

I just came back from B&N with Inside Llewyn Davis, Down By Law and The Player.

I will be watching ILD tonight for the first time and I'm excited.

I watched A Serious Man last night on cable and what an underappreciated little Coen Brothers gem that one is.

The scene with the rabbi telling the story about the dentist is the kind of scene that Wes Anderson can only dream about making.

ILD is one of my favorite moves all time. I can't wait to hear what you think. I believe or will gain in appreciation and eventually been seen as one of the greats.

I love the old noir moves and I've always wanted to see Asphalt Jungle. I did a blind buy of the Criterion disc and as I'm sure most of you already are aware I was greatly rewarded. Such and awesome movie and I absolutely love the interviews with John Huston. Is it possible to be nostalgic for a time you didn't fully experience?

Have you seen A Serious Man?

God it's so good.

...maybe the Coen Brothers most nihilistic film.

I think we've talked before about Mexican films. So far, I've only seen Hasta el Viento tiene Miedo (Even the Wind Is Afraid); which is an amazingly eerie, unsettling film that I wish would be released on Blu-ray.

Non-Criterion related, but I rewatched Eyes Wide Shut again tonight and I'm convinced that this is Kubrick's greatest film.

I was actually quite obsessed with this when it came out. Saw it four times in theaters and it was by leaps and bounds my favorite film that year. Stulhbarg is absurdly good. The last shot was my desktop background on my old computer too.

Manufactured vs. experienced nostalgia? Commercialism in this country banks on it.

Great film though, can't wait to nab one myself. I love listening to John Huston too, it'll be a treat.

It's probably my 2nd favorite after 2001. One of our local theatres showed it last night as part of a series of Christmas films. Was great to finally see this one on the big screen.
