I'm ambivalent about this whole 2016 thing. It was amusing at first but now it sort of reduces these deaths to a statistic.
I think it was the trio of Prince, Bowie, and Muhammad Ali, three enormous, iconic individuals, that put this year over the top in terms of notable deaths. Then, you had deaths like that of Jose Fernandez at 24 years old, who was arguably the most talented pitcher in baseball. So, huge stories like that overshadowed the deaths of Curtis Hanson or Abbas Kiarostami or Andrzej Wadja or Umberto Eco or Leonard Cohen, for example, who were very notable figures.

A lot of it is cyclical.

Keep in mind as the Baby Boomer era enters its twilight phase, a lot of the living icons we've come to know over the past 40-50 years are going to continue to pass away. So it won't just be 2016, there will logically be more to come in the next 4-5 years. We can't chalk it all up to supernaturalism or superstition. An era is ending.

During the 1980s, a lot of famous film icons from the Golden Age of Hollywood died left and right because that generation--those stars of the 1940s and 50s--was drawing to a close as they fought old age and disease.

Absolutely true. People are saying 2016 has been rough but I can't imagine what the next 5 years will be like with all of these iconic actors, musicians and celebrities knocking on deaths door. An era that most or all of us have grown up with is coming to an end (that is the era of post-1967 cinema stars included).

All I've gotten is crickets. I know the title is OOP, so even if they can't replace it, a simple "sorry we don't have any more stock" would be fine. But I can't get a response at all.
Thanks for telling about the issue. Just checked my disc and the film freezes at 1:51:16 and won't play any further. Also, the main menu loads but only the menu itself (movie, timeline, chapters etc. buttons), not the video in the menu. Weird.
The IFPI numbers on the disc (don't remember what those are called) are L324 on the inner ring and L325 on the outer ring. No signs of bronzing/rotting but maybe I'm just not seeing it.

That especially sucks for me because I still haven't seen the movie and paid like $60 for it when the disc went OOP

I wonder what do we need to do for Criterion to acknowledge the issue?

I wouldn't send an inquiry to the Mulvaney email address (I'd opt for using the Orders@Criterion.com because they always reply). If Jon Mulvaney even exists he's knee-deep in Ray Jackson emails.

Thanks, sent an email to both.

Seems like the issue was brought up a year ago on Reddit. The guy even had the same problem with black main menu.

I know the initial instructions were to just send the discs and not to email as well, so maybe they purposefully ignore emails on the topic?

The thing is, Le Cercle Rouge wan't on their list of (possibly) faulty discs so they might just send the same disc back. But I may be wrong.

I am looking forward to the results, along with the Criterion New Year's cartoon.

Carrie Fisher dead at 60! This year's Academy Award's Ceremony portion that honors those who died in 2016 will be one of the saddest ever!

So everytime someone emails stuff like Wat up Jon, Disc Rot, I love Criterion, Please release Chasing Amy on Blu-ray ASAP!

... Be sure folks at Criterion are giggling while going through everyone's emails and there are tons of it everyday, hence why yours might be lost.

You guys will be better off emailing to these following addresses: claire@criterion.com , orders@criterion.com

Good Luck.

As the annual New Year's sketch drawing is on its way later this week, what are your predictions for 2017? I'm hoping for more Spike Jonze, Paul Thomas Anderson, Noah Baumbach (Kicking & Screaming upgrade please), and Martin Scorsese in the collection. I'm still holding out hope for Alexander Payne's Citizen Ruth and Election.

The reason why I put Mulvaney in quotes is that I clearly know it's fake. "Mulvaney" usually responds, but the fact that there isn't a response to multiple e-mails regarding "Le Cercle Rouge" inquiries indicates they aren't sending replacements of that disc IMO. I'll try to send an e-mail to orders, but it just feels like they're out of stock.

That can wait.

Beastie Boys Video Anthology is the one that needs the upgrade.

I even sent a email to Criterion suggesting them to do that.

Mulvaney said he would look into it.

He better damn well do it.

Peace on earth will be achieved when we see Sabotage in 1080p Full High Definition in DTS HD MA 5.1.

With the the 2017 New Year's hint only a few days away, I was wondering if there have been any hints in 2016 of any Japanese film releases from Criterion in 2017?

I'm about 100% sure we will see Tampopo, but that's all I know for sure. I would hope the 1971 Silence would get a release, seeing as Scorsese's version has just seen a release.

Also hoping Criterion finally releases their Hideo Gosha films which they have done jack squat with minus Sword of the Beast and 3 Outlaw Samurai.

Hoping 2017 gives us a ton more, and hoping Lone Wolf and Cub sells, so they know their is a demand for their samurai films.

Lost Highway for 2017. And if we're lucky, The Straight Story!!

I'm hoping Criterion finally puts out The Tenant as well. Long overdue for a Blu release. I don't think there's been one at all yet.
