Holy crapola, I just noticed I've seen only 5 films released this year, but 3 of them became favorites.

The Witch
Knight of Cups
Arrival

Didn't care much for The Lobster and The Neon Demon, and still want to watch Silence and Nocturnal Animals as soon as they get released around my neck of the woods.

I'm assuming it's because Le Cercle Rouge is out of print and they need proof that they're actually replacing a defective disc and not being scammed.

The trailer looked like the most moronic film ever. I did not like the humor AT ALL. Then it came out and everyone, especially my students, loved it. I see Deadpool shirts every day. My dad even said it was funny, and he doesn't really like violence or dark/dirty humor. Still, I can't help but feel like my initial reaction was probably correct.

I also got a response today from "Mulvaney" from one of my old e-mails that was sent in November. I think "Jon" may have been going through extended therapy after the barrage of e-mails from Ray.

TCM will be showing In the Mood for Love on January 9.

If you haven't already seen the movie (which you should have) and don't already own the Blu-ray (which you should), then you best set that DVR to record.

Among the year's worst in my eyes. And I realize that's an unpopular opinion for Nocturnal Animals. Also, the first SLC Punk is in my Top 10 favorite movies, so...

I can understand if someone was not a fan of Nocturnal Animals overall, but you have to admit that entire scene on the highway was brilliantly executed on every level.

I thought it was okay. I thought that if the whole movie was that sequence, it would have been better. But even if the whole movie was just the half with Gyllenhaal and Michael Shannon, it would have been better, but it'd just be a mediocre revenge movie in my eyes.

With that said, which other Japanese animation films can someone recommend to me to watch with him? I know very little about Japanese animation and have only seen this film and Grave of the Fireflies. I'm looking for other G rated titles, although I don't necessarily mind a PG rated film if someone thinks that a 3 year old could kind of gather what is going on and enjoy the film.
Thanks!

I posted the above in the My Neighbor Totoro thread. I know a lot of you are very familiar with Japanese animation, so if you wouldn't mind making a recommendation, I'll meet you in that thread.

Some most wanted yet-to-be-released worthy of the Criterion treatment:

Matewan
Two Women
Winchester '73
The Big Sky

Never thought I'd see One-Eyed Jacks get a decent release, much less Criterion, but that one topped my 2016 list!

You missed the point of the movie if all you got from it was a revenge plot
