Horrible, really? Sure the contrast and sharpness is better in the Criterion release but I wouldn't exactly call it horrible.

Because Studio Canal has not allowed Criterion to renew their licensing on a number of titles, some people around here just get too excited, it seems, when they deliver a product that's not up to the "Criterion standard," in their opinion. That review went up a couple of weeks ago, though, so it's surprising that we're just now hearing about it in this forum.

It's not "horrible." Again, though... just an opinion... meaning, it's worthless.

Thanks for the heads-up. I was considering purchasing the upcoming StudioCanal release, but when I discovered there was a Criterion edition I decided the high price to snag one of the out-of-print copies was worth it.

I have a question regarding Vampyr for anyone who owns the standard DVD edition (I don't believe it's released on Blu yet). Is it the creepy, psychological type of horror or is there gore involved? I'm not a horror fan, especially of gory films, but it looks interesting.

The colors resemble the codec screen from Metal Gear Solid.

Still Gomorrah is not a movie I would want to see again.
I agree Gomorrah was a disappointment.

City of God is one I always recommend as a far superior film with very similar themes.

But if you're disturbed by gangster movies you might not like it either. But it's worth a shot.

I would't call it horrible... but it is markedly inferior, and demonstrably so.

The US releases for the Studio Canal Collection have been something of a sick joke so far. Not all of their releases are bad but "uneven" is about the kindest thing you can say about their work overall.

Wonder what's going on with that Breathless review, usually the Criterion reviews are up a few weeks prior to their release. Not that I can't wait, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how it turned out.

As for Gomorrah, I really enjoyed it. It's been a while since I've seen City of God (or even Gomorrah for that matter), but I think the main difference, aside from setting obviously, is that City of God is a lot more stylized than Gomorrah. Also, the central characters are more fleshed out, which gives the film more of an emotional center.

Gomorrah can come off a little cold and slow at times, but I think it's very true to the material. I can see how some people might be turned off by the lack of narrative or whatever, but I thought it was a pretty fascinating look into a part of the world that not many people know very much about.

It's certainly not gore-filled..... If you can find a clip of it, with the quality, you would probably laugh at the thought of anything "Graphic" occurring in it...... It's most certainly more psychological, or "suspenseful" if you will.

Have you not gone over to DVDBeaver to look at their review for "Breathless?" It was put up sometime early last week.

I pre-ordered it at Amazon.co.uk quite some timer ago but will probably jump to the US DVD.

I couldn't find it on Amazon.com...

Completely agree. It was very cold at times, dirty and gritty but that was the whole purpose. "The Ugly Truth"

Yea, I checked it out. I like to read all the different reviews, but for some reason I just prefer this site.

Same feelings here Chad...and I might add it one day, but opted to hold off for now (as per the end of the last July B & N sale).

Freaking B&N. I received the wrong item in the mail and they won't respond to e-mail or no answer on the phone. I only received one of the two Criterions I ordered.

It's quite interesting because people based a lot on screen captures but yet everyone has different equipment, eye sight, seating arrangement and so forth.

It's probably not "horrible".

I happened to find a review of Charade, with some comparisons with the DVD.

Check out this screenshot comparison.
