I was running a 100-mile ultramarathon this weekend, so I'm only just now seeing the 2017 drawing clues.

They Live By Night is the possibility that really gets my pulse racing, but I'm also pumped for Sixteen Candles and Ghost World if those happen.

This is one of the longest threads I've ever seen, so apologies if this has been discussed before, but is there a reason CC isn't upgrading past titles, particularly the Godard first wave films? or 'Faust'?

Like with addition of new titles, upgradation of any titles depends on:
1. Whether they own the rights for blu-ray release
2. Availability of good quality sources from the license holders
3. Extent of work required in terms of producing good quality HD masters
4. Cost of the project vs expected returns in terms

These factors limit the number of projects Criterion or any other quality studio can take on at a time, and they have to prioritize accordingly.

The silver lining in all of this, besides finishing the 100-mile race, is that the extènded recovery period this month will give me time to watch more Blu-rays. I'm planing to plow through the Miami Vice box set, and probably watch The Asphalt Jungle even more (I've already watched the disc three times since I bought it.).

Right. I assumed so. It strikes me as strange though, I'd assume they'd've been knocking Godard out of the park, at least in terms of upgrades. But I guess maybe, like with Pete the Fool they don't have the rights anymore. Is there a way to find out? Like a database or something? I usually see a lot of people discussing who does and doesn't have rights, not quite knowing where that info comes from.

EDIT: Are the NYE drawings for the whole year or just the first quarter?

I love Box of Moonlight! Sam Rockwell is pretty funny in that and John Turturro delivered a superb performance too. I feel like that film is a bit of a cult classic even though its not really known too well. It's such a great little 90's gem of a film. I caved in and purchased the DVD a few years ago because I wanted to see it so badly again. This would be a great addition to the Criterion Collection without a doubt.

So in continuing my epic watch of the Dekalog box set, I had wrongly assumed that the 3rd and 4th discs were supplements, but soon discovered that Disc 3 contained 2 additional films (longer versions of 2 of the episodes on the 5th and 6th commandments (murder and adultery)).

So last night I watched A Short Film about Love and wow, that alternate ending was so much better!!! So much more surreal and "what if" kept popping into my head. It was such a SAD, SAD, SAD film! So pitiful and pathetic...yet so true on the timing of love. And how the "sanctity of love" can be ruined by a person's perspective. What I realized, without giving away anything about this film is, one of the characters loved the other person before they knew it, while the other character loved the other person after it was too late. It was all about TIMING!

This comes one night after I watched A Short Film about Killing, which was BRUTAL as hell. Def. not a fun film to watch on the first day of the new year. It was so tragic and yet justified at the same time how the man who commited the killing ended up getting punished (I think the defense lawyer mentioned something about "punishment being a form of revenge"). Anyway, I don't ever want to watch that film again.

Not necessarily either. Could be this year, could be next year, could be later. A drawing hint generally just mean it's in the works.

Holy crap lol , I just received Red River from Criterion.. I didnt expect the package to be that huge. A great film gets a great release I guess. I wonder if they would do the same for The Furies which also was a huge package in DVD with the book.

Molly Ringwald will be 49 next month and Michael Schoeffling (Jake) turned 56 last month. Time flies.....

I watched I Knew Her Well yesterday. The picture quality on the Blu-ray is wonderful--I forget sometimes just how good a B&W film can look in high definition with a great transfer. I think this film will stay with me for a while. It felt very "real." You can sort of see the ending coming but it still gets to you.

The Criterion release is pretty light on extras, though. I watched an alternate opening (from the German release, I believe) on YouTube that had the sunbathing heroine lying on her back rather than her stomach when the camera reaches her. It seems like that sort of thing should been made it onto the Blu-ray.

One of the best films Criterion released last year that for some reason doesn't seem to get much attention on this thread.
