I've never subscribed to this notion. The actors are doing what they do - act. The director's job is to use people that are suited for the respective fields and construct what they put forth into his or her desired piece. Just because an actor has a substantial part in the script they read does not mean that will be the final result (an example that doesn't involve Malick: Sarah Paulson had a far more integral part in Carol and wasn't at all displeased with the result, outside of one omission, because she acknowledged the creative process.) Working with someone like Malick, especially now, the actor should know that this possibility is even greater, as his films aren't found on set but in the editing room. Hell, this isn't even a new tactic of his - the script for Days of Heaven heavily differs from what we see on screen.

I've only seen three of Malick's films, but I've only liked one (Badlands). The Thin Red Line didn't move me at all, and I really detested the voiceover in Days of Heaven. I almost picked up The New World at B&N during their sale, but thought the better of it.

I can't believe this is the same director who directed Onibaba. That film is batsh*t crazy.

Given, the definition below and Plummer's character in the film being stranded in remote Virginia, I'd say that worked out great.

noun, Australian Informal.
1.
a person who has become eccentric from living alone in a remote area.
2.
a person who lives alone in the bush, as a herder or prospector.
Origin Expand
1850-55; said to be from the phrase “as mad as a hatter”

I think it's safe to say that if Bergman, Tarkovsky, and Malle in his collaborations with Shawn and Gregory had a gang bang, the product would look something like Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Winter Sleep.

Is this the film of the decade?

A cube with a question mark on it is a hilariously vague clue.

If only it had a little slit on the top, I'd guess they were finally putting out Election.

It's tied to the clock behind it to give "Mysterious Object at Noon"

I didn't like Winter Sleep as much. It was more of a traditional Bergmanesque chamber drama. That's fine, but that's not what I like about that director.

Get around already, you guys. It again has that quiet understated technique but it's emotionally blistering. If you want further encouragement, I'll link to my review of the film and UK blu HERE

I was stunned by it as well. It took me ages to find my car after that screening as I was so lost in thought.

(And it's pretty crazy that there's no blurays of Uzak, Climates, and three monkeys. Two are on Fandor btw, but that's still not good enough.)

What if the window in the drawing is for The Window (1949)? Oh man, wouldn't that be something?

Watched the Criterion version of Lady Snowblood.

I still think the color grading is messed up here. I'm 98% sure there's NO WAY this is even close to what it looked like in theatres originally. The teal is turned up way too much in some placed and it looks as if there has been over-boosted contrast placed on white at times, too. Yuki's pale complexion seems more artificial-looking than I remember (Kaji is obviously is wearing a ton of makeup here too).

That said, it's still a great genre movie that adapts the manga in an original and thoughtful manner but still manages to be faithful to the spirit of the manga. I'm a big fan of the manga, but its mixture of bizarre exploitation skeezyness (the manga originally ran in a Japanese adult men's magazine similar to Maxim/Playboy) and female ass-kicking probably would have limited the film's audience and rep (although I would have still liked it if they did keep those things).

I think that's been backed up by folks who saw a print recently in a Japanese theater. The Criterion color grading is probably not what the film looked like originally. I still thought it looked pretty good--definitely better than the Arrow release of the Female Prisoner Scorpion series (a botched release if I've ever seen one). The colors really do pop on the Criterion edition.

There's nothing much that Criterion could add to Universal's release of Rear Window. There's no new restoration, and that disc is loaded with extras. So that alone rules it out in my opinion.
