Nah, bro.. you serious?
I love 16 Candles as much as you do. Although reviving certain discussions can trigger bad memories. You don't want the boogeyman to reappear cause if that happens we may need to call in John Wick to take him out. Last edited by UncleBuckWild; 01-12-2017 at 07:36 AM. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 90 minute cut getting a theatrical US release later this year too? |

If Criterion releases Sixteen Candles, then I'll make it a double feature night with Niagara, since Max Showalter appears in both films.
(The first time that I watched Niagara, I kept wondering, "Where in the hell have I seen that guy before?" It finally dawned on me that he played the grandfather in Sixteen Candles.) [Show spoiler]

Was checking out the supplements on The Asphalt Jungle and feel the inclusion of “Pharos of Chaos” merits a special mention. Sterling Hayden was one fascinating dude and this incredible portrait needs to be seen. Those expecting a cheerful, feature length career retrospective will however be disappointed as we meet a scornful, plastered, hashish-smoking Hayden aboard his barge somewhere along the Dutch waters. Over the course of several afternoons Hayden recounts his sailing and military experiences, the HUAC hearings and his continuing bouts with Alcoholism.
There are few interesting film nuggets particularly the ones involving Altman, Kubrick, Huston etc but they are few and far between. He’s guilt-ridden and in a somewhat self-destructive state but anecdotes are shared with refreshing candour. Clocking at almost 2 hours and filled with Hayden’s verbal idiosyncrasies some might find it tedious or even depressing but it is truly one of a kind exploration into a storied career and a troubled mind. The newly produced Eddie Muller & John Bailey pieces were also extremely informative. A great release all around. ![]() |

I've been looking forward to watching Pharos of Chaos since I learned it would be included as an extra. It's currently on the top of my unwatched pile. Maybe next week. |

Catching up ... btw Louis Malle's Black Moon is on Filmstruck, as part of an "adult fairy tale" collection. Valerie and her week of wonders, too. :>
For those asking about titles for blind buys, you really ought to subscribe to the Criterion Channel option of Filmstruck to sample films before viewing. Some films that I missed on BD (Chungking Express), and some that have never been on BD (Pygmalion) are there and look great on HD streaming (via Apple TV in my case). From what I read on Criterion's site, the packaging and extras in the Dr. Strangelove BD are incredible. There's a feature on Blood Simple with the two execs of Criterion/Janus talking about their brand's history, missions, and they talk a bit about the packaging and how it's become a "thing." Anyway! I just took inventory, and I have all these on my unwatched Criterion pile: 3 Women L'Avventura Head Drive He Said The King of Marvin Gardens Last Picture Show Beyond the Valley of the Dolls Bicycle Thieves Cat People Every Tati movie besides Monsieur Hulot's Holiday Fanny and Alexander Harakiri In Cold Blood I Married A Witch In the Mood for Love John Cassavetes: Five Films (I forgot I even HAD this, it got boxed away somehow) The Kid Last Year at Marienbad Lone Wolf and Cub full box Mccabe and Mrs Miller My Darling Clementine La Notte Only Angels Have Wings The River Short Cuts Smiles of a Summer Night Il Sorpasso The Squid and the Whale Thief Throne of Blood Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! Valerie and her Week of Wonders Sanjuro Along with 26 that I've seen the movies, but haven't watched the Criterion version yet! I have a serious problem. The really sad thing is that I keep up with almost all the stuff from other labels, much of which is bad. I guess I should probably tackle them alphabetically and break up the box sets somehow. |

Yeah, Harakiri seems to be one of the titles that is most frequently mentioned as a favorite in this thread. I'll aim for that one quickly. I started In the Mood for Love at some point and got distracted by some real life event and never ended up going back to it. I have it sitting next to my player still, though! Thanks for the recs.

Glad we got that outta the way...
Next time you see a random 16C hater, just tell em to their face - "Ain't no body blowin' my candles tonight." #thatswhatmollysaid On to your unwatched stack: I'd recommend - Il Sorpasso, Smiles of a Summer Night - two light hearted, fun flicks. |
