Like, I think after that violate line, which is SUPPOSED to sound bad, he says something like WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!, which always read to me as "this guy is one horny idiot."

Besides that, it's generally good-hearted. I remember reading an interview with Gedde Watanabe where he finished the movie, thought he'd done a good job and was proud of it, and then was surprised when other asians started blasting him for it! I guess he didn't have an accent himself and just thought he was doing "wacky funny party guy" or something and hadn't personally had any issue with it. So, I guess it was partly an asian oppressing asians there! Oh well. I sure wouldn't show it to anyone under the age of 25 or any asian people, but I still really like the movie and so do most (white people) I show it to And what I think of when I think of that movie and stuff I find funny are not just the asian stereotype, but the blasting of the "oily bohunk" and the awful blonde sister with the muscle relaxants and joan cusack in the neck brace and john cusack and the other nerd following around Farmer Ted, and ESPECIALLY the hilarious old people. If the movie's anything, it's ageist!! I love when the idiot grandpa starts talking to Dong like he's a dog and clapping after every phrase. And then what REALLY stuck with me is that it's pretty much a movie where everyone actually wants to get along and there aren't really any villains. Most of the conflict just comes from misunderstandings and people being oblivious. Farmer Ted having the heart-to-heart with Jake, that scene with Samantha and her dad on the couch, etc were so unlike what I was used to seeing in 90s comedies, where they always had to have hissable bad guys. Or even all of the other Hughes movies, like the principals in Ferris Bueller/Breakfast Club, or Chet in Weird Science, or whatever that jerky guy's name was in Pretty in Pink!

Now I will be banned for resurrecting a dead argument. I just really love that movie and have for many years. Yet I have a hard time believing it might be in the Criterion collection.

In other Criterion news, I got Cat People, Squid and the Whale, Punch Drunk Love, and Blood Simple for Christmas and still haven't watched any of them. I am a bad person.

I'm looking forward to Blow-Up. I have seen a lot of disparaging remarks about it over the last couple years saying it dated very badly, but I still frequently see it labelled as an influence on various things I like, and I'd been putting off buying the DVD. I guess it paid off here!

Dated? Blow up definitely does not feel dated. It's incredible

According to my closest IMAX theater, they will be showing it until April 28. So my best guess is we won't get any word of a bluray for a while.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 90 minute cut getting a theatrical US release later this year too?

(The first time that I watched Niagara, I kept wondering, "Where in the hell have I seen that guy before?" It finally dawned on me that he played the grandfather in Sixteen Candles.)

Was checking out the supplements on The Asphalt Jungle and feel the inclusion of “Pharos of Chaos” merits a special mention. Sterling Hayden was one fascinating dude and this incredible portrait needs to be seen. Those expecting a cheerful, feature length career retrospective will however be disappointed as we meet a scornful, plastered, hashish-smoking Hayden aboard his barge somewhere along the Dutch waters. Over the course of several afternoons Hayden recounts his sailing and military experiences, the HUAC hearings and his continuing bouts with Alcoholism.
There are few interesting film nuggets particularly the ones involving Altman, Kubrick, Huston etc but they are few and far between. He’s guilt-ridden and in a somewhat self-destructive state but anecdotes are shared with refreshing candour.
Clocking at almost 2 hours and filled with Hayden’s verbal idiosyncrasies some might find it tedious or even depressing but it is truly one of a kind exploration into a storied career and a troubled mind.

The newly produced Eddie Muller & John Bailey pieces were also extremely informative. A great release all around.

I remember years ago watching Hayden's guest appearances on the Tomorrow show with Tom Snyder. He was much as you describe, not unlike his character in The Long Goodbye from that period. He was openly scornful of Hollywood and freely admitted he was basically a ***** for boat money. As for alcohol and drugs, while not discussed, it seemed likely that he was under the influence of something. Hayden was always entertaining, in a human train-wreck kind of way.

I've been looking forward to watching Pharos of Chaos since I learned it would be included as an extra. It's currently on the top of my unwatched pile. Maybe next week.

Catching up ... btw Louis Malle's Black Moon is on Filmstruck, as part of an "adult fairy tale" collection. Valerie and her week of wonders, too. :>

For those asking about titles for blind buys, you really ought to subscribe to the Criterion Channel option of Filmstruck to sample films before viewing. Some films that I missed on BD (Chungking Express), and some that have never been on BD (Pygmalion) are there and look great on HD streaming (via Apple TV in my case).

From what I read on Criterion's site, the packaging and extras in the Dr. Strangelove BD are incredible.

There's a feature on Blood Simple with the two execs of Criterion/Janus talking about their brand's history, missions, and they talk a bit about the packaging and how it's become a "thing."

But yes, Filmstruck is pretty fantastic and will be even moreso once they're on Roku.

Yeah, Harakiri seems to be one of the titles that is most frequently mentioned as a favorite in this thread. I'll aim for that one quickly. I started In the Mood for Love at some point and got distracted by some real life event and never ended up going back to it. I have it sitting next to my player still, though! Thanks for the recs.
