If Criterion is able to get Perfect Blue on Blu-Ray that would be great.

The subject matter is one thing. It's presentation is another. I just wasn't particularly impressed by the camera nor interested in the fates of its central characters.

Nobody's saying that Criterion releasing anime should be a new habit, but there's certainly a case to be made that doing 1 or 2 would be a nice change of pace.

And nobody is forcing anyone to buy said release, they can easily just pass on it. I also agree it'd be a nice change of pace. That being said, I'm game for a nice C release of Perfect Blue or Millennium Actress!

I would like A Perfect Blue release in North America, period. Personally, I'd also love it if one of those companies that specialize in slashers and gialli released it. But if Criterion did a Perfect Blue release, I certainly wouldn't complain.

I just want a good Blu-Ray release of the film. Funimation can release for all I care, I just want it. Criterion releasing it would just be a delicious cherry on top for me.

eh criterion can release dragon ball z for all i care. people worship criterion a bit blindly at times.

not that there's anything wrong with that. just one schmuck's (me) opinion.

ALSO...I'd confidently show Kon's 'Tokyo Godfathers' to any anti anime person. I strongly feel it's a lean film with a lot of heart and western sensibilities (basically a spiritual remake to John Ford's 2 pictures).

That is another one that badly needs a release here in the states.

I would prefer Criterion since they will probably be the ones willing to dig up great extras or make some themselves.

Good question. Why all the posts about something you obviously don't like?

Not overly enamored, though very familiar with anime and just like any genre there's a wide gamut of styles and stories within. There are def anime titles worthy of Criterion and I agree that 'Perfect Blue' is one of them. People seemed to like Hollywood's essentially remake of it ('Black Swan').

Not just extras, but the transfer it deserves.

Funimation usually does great work so I trust they would do their best work for a film like Perfect Blue or Tokyo Godfathers. Just they don't do impressive work with extras.

Who cares? It's not like one movie will take up the entire conversation in this thread of a label who's released hundreds of movies. Just ignore it. Criterion should be allowed to release at least a few anime. There are plenty that are "important classic and contemporary films."

It's been a while since I saw their offerings, but I remember them being hit-or-miss some years back and not above passing off SD up scales as "HD".

I also remember PB as having a checkered transfer history in particular so I'd like to see a nice restoration such as the one 'Belladonna of Sadness' just received.
