I just pre-ordered Mildred Pierce from Amazon for $26 and change.

I (finally) joined Amazon Prime this week, and I'm pretty sure that my Prime membership is going to pay for itself pretty quickly. It's nice to order Blu-rays individually from Amazon now without having to cluster my orders together for the non-member free shipping amount, and it will also be nice to have this near the release date.

That's why I love Prime so much, it's nice knowing I could order ten separate, cheap blu-rays and never have to worry about the shipping/combining orders.

In the past, I've always settled for clustering my orders to meet the $49 free shipping on Amazon, but it's frustrating, because Amazon holds certain titles hostage so that they can ship them all together. (Although I'll admit that this is the mother of first world problems, because my still-unwatched Blu-ray stack keeps me busy anyway.)
I've also used the free month of Prime membership once or twice a year when it comes available, but it's nice to have it for a full year now.

Sign up for a free prime student account trial if you haven't already. Gets you 6 months, with the option to get a full year for $50 after. Just select graduate school or something, and it should work.

Nice. I had one from university and grad school, but I don't think they're valid anymore, and I can't remember them anyway lol

I'm someone who will rail against corporate tyranny at any chance, but I really have no problem with Amazon Prime. If you're a big reader or film watcher, you're going to save so much money over the course of the year. I mean, I spend 40-50 bucks per week on lunch, sometimes more, so Prime is probably one of the better deals in my life. I can also stream a lot of the new shit that comes out that I don't want to buy (i.e. Oscar bait that my girlfriend loves), so it's win-win.

not that there's anything wrong with that. just one schmuck's (me) opinion.

ALSO...I'd confidently show Kon's 'Tokyo Godfathers' to any anti anime person. I strongly feel it's a lean film with a lot of heart and western sensibilities (basically a spiritual remake to John Ford's 2 pictures).
Honestly, I've never understood the still-existing "I hate all anime" position. It's every bit as broad a medium as any other. It's true that the more discerning tastes may find stuff like DBZ and the dozens upon dozens of Shonen Jump-style anime to be "juvenile trash" but that would be like brushing off all American movies as being about superheroes. There's a lot more to anime than shows about teenagers in fighting tournaments and cute-girl shows about cute girls doing cute things. There is literally something for everyone, if you even put forth 10% effort to look (and aren't discriminating about older stuff).

And while I am a big Ghibli fan, its position among non-anime fans as some kind of "gold standard" of anime is, on some level, pretty disappointing. There are a lot of anime out there that are bolder, braver, and more ambitious than the largely "safe" family-friendly Ghibli output. I would have expected film buffs who "only" watch Ghibli to be a little more adventurous, given that they wouldn't just watch one type of live action genre all the time. There are also many true anime "auteur" directors with a distinct, individualistic maverick vision, that you just don't find in much of Western animation. Or perhaps the popularity of Ghibli above all other anime means that "safe" is actually what most people want?

+1. I like being able to buy what's on sale when it's on sale. For instance, I snagged Mildred Pierce when it dropped to $20.99. I didn't have to pad my order to get free shipping, which might have mitigated my savings. I don't know if these savings over the course of a year offset the cost of Prime, but it helps.

I also enjoy their free (if somewhat limited) video and music streaming services.

I swear Amazon hypnotizes people. How does Prime save anyone money? I pay $0 a year for shipping, and $0 for prime. Prime members pay $0 for shipping and what, $100 a year for prime? I understand that some people feel the service is worth the money (like, it's worth $100 a year to be able to buy a $5 blu-ray whenever I want by itself and get streaming stuff), but how does it save money?

Sorry, I know I'm the anti prime guy, but this stuff just baffles me.

Depends on how much you use Amazon. Since Amazon is pretty much the only place I buy my Blu-Rays, I save well over $100 a year from their free shipping. Prime also gives you access to their digital service which if you just use that rather then say Netflix or Hulu, you are also saving money since subscription services can cost nearly $100 yearly.

He stated how. He states Prime is a good value if you're a big reader or film watcher. He gets to watch several movies via Prime video rather than buying the Blu-ray, or seeing it in theater. One instance of this is Cameraperson, which is free right now for Prime members. You'd either have to rent it, or buy the Criterion BD to watch it. As for books, you get a free book every month, plus you can borrow books from Kindle's lending library. They also have perks for music and photos too, among others. Additionally if you have an Amazon Visa Signature card, Prime members now save 5% off their Amazon orders. That can easily add up over the course of a year. If you spent $2000 a year for instance, the membership basically pays for itself through that one offer.

There are also more and more Prime Exclusive deals. Not only for movies, but for groceries, etc..If one is taking advantage of these things, Prime is without a doubt a great value. Even if they just used the video service, it would still be great. It's cheaper than Netflix, and has amassed an excellent library of titles to choose from.

I'm not pro-Amazon btw. I don't approve of many of their shady practices here, and overseas (tax loopholes, holding publishers and studios hostage, shameless pricematching, etc..), but I have no qualms about saying Prime is a great value for many people, myself included.

I'm gonna guess Criterion sneaks in an announcement for their next Chaplin release this month, because it seems a bit overdue. Which one? I dunno, but I'm hoping it's "The Circus" because that's the one I never had on DVD.
