Yeah, but the latter two of those are mainly problems of the past, what was the last non-anamorphic disc they released? Color-timing is a tricky thing to complain about, since a lot of people have a lot of very different memories.

Some people notice the issues.... others state Criterion is vastly overrated, and produces junk (I think those people are negative for the sake of being argumentative however....)
But Criterion always has someone close to the material with them on the transfer. So all the manipulations that they do are what the artists themself wanted their films to look like. I mean if you were a director or DP and knew that a shot had to much grain or not enough contrast, and now have the ability to add it, you should.....what you should not to is pull a George Lucas and just keep updating 3 films.....or Speilburging guns into walkie-talkies

It's release date delivery. Amazon's choice of carrier depends on your location.

I guess he's countering the people who ask why do people buy Michael Bay/Roland Emmerich/Will Smith/Jud Apatow/etc films?

The only thing that influenced Speilburg was his sexually abusive raging alcoholic father.....or something of that sort to make him put a bad father in EVERY ONE of his movies

EXECUTIVE: Mr. Spielburg we want you to make this movie about (aliens attacking the world, archeologist, killer shark, dinosaurs).

SPIELBURG: Ok......just one thing.

EXECUTIVE: What?

SPEILBURG: It needs a lousy father figure, or a kid that is hung up on daddy issues.

EXECUTIVE: I dont think thats a good idea.

SPEILBURG: *starts crying* Thats what daddy always said, wahhhh

EXECUTIVE: Ok ok we can put that in

Quick question. Anyone think Godard's Contempt will ever come back to Criterion? Has anyone seen the studiocanal version, and if so, how is the quality? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, if you have the Criterion dvd, stay with that. If you don't, just ask yourself if you want a littler better transfer in the blu-ray, or the Criterion dvd with more features? I'm sticking with my dvd.

Sorry, didn't mean to be confusing or, most definitely, condescending.

At the beginning of the year, I began renting DVDs from Zip.ca, a Canadian equivalent to Netflix. Thus far, I've rented 92 movies from them. I've also taken advantage of the Cinematheque here (actually, a very good institution), and I just watched a couple of movies I had gotten from the library (Z and Closely Watched Trains). I love films, and I feel enriched especially by Criterion releases and foreign films generally.

I was just (needlessly) remarking about how contributors to Blu-ray.com spend their money on movies. I've been really happy renting these movies, which average out to just over $2 a film; on occasion, I'll specifically request a new Criterion Blu-ray release, and that will cost me $5. But I have to admit that the vast majority of these films aren't those that I would expect to revisit any time in the medium future. I'm glad I saw them, and definitely would recommend them, but I can't imagine owning them. So such titles as Walkabout, Black Orpheus, Playtime, Chungking Express, Last Year at Marienbad, Gomorrah, Revanche, Lola Montes, Hunger, Summer Hours, Everlasting Moments, Red Desert, The Secret of the Grain, or Crumb (especially), are all movies, among others, I've really appreciated seeing, and some I've really loved. I just couldn't imagine myself owning these, though. And don't get me started on typical Hollywood stuff!

I'm not making a value judgment about other peoples' tastes in films, their purchase decisions, or their predilection for collecting. I, too, have assembled some things in my time, and my tastes may not be shared by all.

But then, I can't believe what I'm spending to attend 17 screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival. It's ridiculous! I may be better off just buying Blu-rays. So what do I know?

Cheers

They're still interesting, and the reviewer does a real good job, but they're definitely more useful when the product isn't Criterion, because with Criterion you pretty much know it's gonna be great.
The Last Emperor comes to mind. Though that's really a combination of not having access to the negative and allowing themselves to be hornswaggled by Vittorio Storaro.

I agree with you. Dr. Svet always gives very high ratings for the technical qualities even when the film doesn't deserve it, such as Paris, Texas and Chungking. I can understand wanting to give high marks simply because it's the best the print has ever looked, but when you see the ratings you usually compare it to other films who have the same ratings, and oftentimes they're nowhere near as good. You have to take it with a grain of salt. Granted, at the end of the day it's all about the film.
