Joke aside, I'm going to write this month down just to prepare the end of year "worst Criterion 2017 covers" because most of these will probably end up in the short list :
- overloaded impersonal listing for Buena Vista
- random "let's turn this one into a cartoon !" Woman of the Year
- bland Rumble Fish which ressembles a generic modern poster. Not a bad cover per se, but it's just... bland and generic
- Tampopo is a weird one. I like the idea, but not the execution. In any case, I much prefer the theatrical poster.

And even the individual releases from the randomly broken sets are from a set with a general awful layout artwork.

And the Woman of the Year page cites the wrong George :
Woman of the Year - George Cukor
While it should be George Stevens

On a totally different note, Woman of the Year and Buena Vista Social Club are both advertised as "high def transfers" instead of 2K / 4K restorations, which doesn't bode well.

I had read some posts a few back about some people hoping that Criterion gets The Usual Suspects. I didn't read all of the posts so I'm not sure if this was already mentioned but I have a huge feeling that Shout! Factory will get this one for their Shout! Select line. Regardless, there is a special edition for this film on the way. I can almost guarantee that since there was one for the DVD and this is a much loved title that has been strangely neglected on blu ray.

The Woman of the Year cover isn't random. It's based off of promo art originally used to market the film from Jacques Kapralik. I love it.

Art is subjective, but I really find them all appealing

Love me some Coppola, but boy am I not impressed by the artwork. Mainly due to its ripping off of another poster:

He designed this for Criterion as well.

TGWTDT is also a designer that has worked on many Criterion posters!

I wouldn't say it is a rip off, its a VERY over used design, its been done thousands of times even before TGWTDT poster.

Tampopo is the one I'm most excited by.

Woman of the Year is the one I'm least interested in. I love me some Tracy/Hepburn (and Stevens), and the film has things to recommend it, but I just hate how the conflict is resolved. (spoiler for those who haven't seen it)
[Show spoiler]Tracy's character is just a whiny little bitca who threatens to leave Hepburn because his ego can't handle her being more successful than he. And to make matters worse, she gives in and quits her job to become a good homemaking wife. It drove me nuts the first time I saw it decades ago, and it still does. Doesn't help that it's praised as this great feminist film.

If Da C wanted to do a Tracy/Hepburn film, Adam's Rib would've been far better choice.

I don't know what, but I was thinking Tampopo was something completely different. I'm glad I just read that description because erotic ramen making might just make me a customer.

I don't think it's so much the new releases, I think it's the lack of upgrades.

A lot of people want a lot of the DVD-only titles to see the light in HD.

Solid month, I'm in for them all. I too had never actually looked up Tampopo but it sounds great now. Woman of the Year is exciting, and Buena Vista sounds like a great music doc. And as someone who has lived near Tulsa forever, I think I have to buy Rumble Fish.

This is airing on TCM tomorrow night since Chazelle is guest programmer. Umbrellas might be smart move as a separate release, with timing to La La Land's inspiration and success. Heck, I could even see La La Land releasing close to that date too.

Edit: I see now Rochefort as a individual release too. It would apply to the above as well.

This is a bit disappointing though. Great month, but I'd still like some sprinkled upgrades.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Young Girls of Rochefort, and La La Land are being released on the same day lol.

They probably will considering how fruitful their Warner relationship appears to be.
I'm still down for Woman... and Rumble Fish. Giving Tampopo a watch next week when we get the restoration at our local theatre.

The deal with Warner killed the upgrades. Simple. They're churning out WB titles like crazy.

Yeah I just noticed Rochefort after posting. Those two releases are no coincidence haha

Still 4 titles on April seems quite low, definitely room for an upgrade, I am sure those un-boxes require a lot less work than a real new release.

Yes. I would like to see them move away from these type of posters composed of superimposed images with a muted color palate. Or better yet, as Ray says, just use the originals. Rumble Fish has an excellent poster already.

Adams Rib is a great film, Jay. Definitely their best of the four or so that I have seen by the pair. Would you still reccomend this one?

This is entirely the reason they're releasing the two Demy films individually, and in April when La La Land also releases on Blu-ray. It's a smart business decision. I'll admit, I've been wanting an individual release of Umbrellas of Cherbourg, it's the only film in the set I've seen so it was annoying that it was only available that way. So in a way this is perfect, but the other movies in the set appear to be quite good and I might want to see them. I also love Catherine Deneuve.

I'm guessing Woman of the Year was chosen because it was their first teaming. I like it but it can't decide if it's comedy or drama and the back and forth swings lose me a little. I hope this is the beginning of more of the Tracy/Hepburn films from Criterion. I enjoy them all and might be the only one who really likes the under the radar dramas they made-Keeper of the Flame and Sea of Grass.

They probably choosed it because it's a personal favorite of one of the higher ups.
