I agree with you about Tin Cup. Not a great movie, but a highly entertaining one. Very high re-watch value for me. Cheech Marin is excellent as Romeo the smart ass caddy, as is the little contest that Cup and David Simms have at the country club. It's not in the same class as Dances With Wolves, JFK, The Untouchables or Bull Durham, but I'd definitely buy it were it to get a blu-ray release.

And there's something about Rene Russo that has always done it for me. She's not at all my type-the women I've dated have predominantly been tall, leggy blonde models (somehow, I am able to date out of my league). I can't explain it.

Put me down as a huge James Spader fan, too. Brilliant in Boston Legal, and, well, pretty much everything he's ever done.

Tin Cup on Blu-ray would be a day-one purchase for me (come on, Warner Archive! Get a move on it!). I agree with you that it's not quite up to Bull Durham levels, but it is a very entertaining movie.

The thing I love the most about Ron Shelton's sports movies (and I'm referring to Bull Durham, White Men Can't Jump, and Tin Cup here) is this: you can win the big game, you can get the girl,
[Show spoiler]but you can't have both.

There was no "big game" in Bull Durham to win, just Kevin Costner setting the minor league home run record and then going to live with Susan Sarandon. I'd still call that a big win.

Woody Harrelson won "the big game" with Wesley Snipes in White Men Can't Jump, but Rosie Perez left him at the end.

Kevin Costner not only didn't win "the big game" at the end of Tin Cup, but he melted down in legendary fashion only to pull a rabbit out of a hat with his "12" score on the final hole, but he did get Rene Russo at the end, which I wouldn't even consider a consolation prize.

So, what did I miss?

J/K -- been keeping up with everything for the most part during my "vacation." Made a few new purchases which I'm very excited about, but haven't had a chance to watch yet, or haven't received.

I got His Girl Friday, one of my favorite movies ever. I also blind bought Something Wild which looks to be right up my alley. Also, though not Criterion, but Godard nonetheless, I ordered the Cohen Film Collection version of A Married Woman, after it was being discussed here earlier. I can't believe that not only do I not own it (yet), but I've never seen it!

That's simply criminal, AFAIC.

Anyways, nice to be back.

Looking forward to the discussions... or not.
It would've been nice to start that class with what the kiddos at Cahiers were into and what they were rebelling against, but still a solid list (though I haven't seen Gallows yet).

(And thanks for reminding me about Rivette. I've got to get to my Out 1 set asap.)

Andrew, how haven't you seen Elevator to the Gallows?

You've seen like 7,000 films according to Letterboxd but you're still missing out on Louis Malle's best?

Got me there, Scott. I guess I've been holding out for either a rainy day or a pretty transfer.

Is this also an issue with the Region B release? I have the UK Godard box set but have never watched the Contempt disc.

I used to hold a similar opinion but then I saw Murmur of the Heart. It’s wickedly hilarious and innocently depraved coming-of-age film that brilliantly succeeds in keeping things non-judgemental inspite of its controversial subject matter. I think along with Au Revoir les Enfants it’s Malle’s most personal work. And I say this despite my fondness for all things noir.

Now there's a great film which I haven't seen in far too long. I need to fix that. Thank goodness for Filmstruck.

Third party sellers on Amazon will try and pass off USED Criterion blu's as NEW. You can tell because it's been re-shrinkwrapped but without the Criterion blu sticker. Super shady. Beware.

I actually talked to the professor afterwards, mainly to tell her that I met Anna Karina. She said it was between any of the Karina-Godard collaborations, really. I'm not complaining.

I'm a huge admirer of Damage, despite the last minute or so, and would say that its high points are the best thing Malle has ever done.

Cool, but if he skips it.. smack em in the face from me!

This film has enough content that one of these days - NYFA might just introduce B.A. in Alphaville!
