Blu-ray Samurai

I don't even have Paper Moon on DVD; it sits on my DVR for now, as I hope Criterion releases it in blu-ray.
Put me down as a huge fan of Peter Bogdanovich. I love They All Laughed, which is sadly overlooked in his oeuvre; it's a modern day form of the screwball comedy; it's also an homage to both early 1980s Manhattan, and Dorothy Stratten, whose role in the film was expanded by Bogdanovich to showcase her breathtaking beauty, and to serve as a launching point for her film career. The backstory surrounding the film is the stuff of Hollywood legend; the tragic murder of Stratten, and the Bogdanovich's ensuing labor of love, as he tried desperately to find a distributor for the film. Such a great cast, it deserves to be seen. Audrey Hepburn in her final feature film appearance, John Ritter, Ben Gazzara. Quentin Tarantino lists it among his favorite films. And I can't think of anybody I'd rather discuss film history with than Mr. Bogdanovich. The man's knowledge, and appreciation of the medium, are limitless. |

I think I would much rather sit down with Robert Osbourne.
I like Bogdonovich (and he definitely knows his stuff) but he often comes off as slightly (and sometimes not so slightly) snooty to me. Maybe it's just me I think I would have a lot more fun with RO. |

I love Bogdanovich's films. Have you seen She's Funny That Way? I think it got unfairly overlooked, it's quite funny and much in line with What's Up, Doc? Great cast as well [Show spoiler] .

He's a decent guy. I've met him in person and he was very friendly.

No, I haven't seen it yet, but have been meaning to. Peter co-wrote the script with his former wife, and Dorothy's younger sister, Louise Stratten.
I've got quite a few of his films to see yet. TAL, Paper Moon, The Last Picture Show and Mask were all so great in their own way, I want to go deeper into his film making career. Noises Off.. and What's Up, Doc? are at the top of my list. Peter was also quite good on The Sopranos. I was surprised to see him there the first time, but his Dr. Elliot Kupferberg had some interesting conversations with Dr. Melfi. Quote:

I like Robert Osborne, too. I can spend all day watching him on TCM.
I've always heard good things about Peter B, but I can see where one might see him as being somewhat snooty. I think it's the cravat. ![]() |

Is anyone still hoping for After Hours to make it to Criterion eventually? Even if Warner released it as a WA Blu-ray, they'd probably just port over the DVD master and release it bare-bones. I think it fits well with Something Wild and other movies in the Collection, plus there's only one Scorsese title in the Collection.

Just watched Black Girl on FilmStruck.
At just under an hour long, it was a very efficient but nonetheless powerful look at post-colonial inequality and prejudice. While the troubling subject matter certainly doesn't make this an enjoyable film to watch, it reminds me why I go for the Criterion Collection films. I love being exposed to people, places, and times I know little or nothing about. We learn more about the world around us through these films, and I certainly learned a lot from Black Girl. |
