I am going to chime in and say that the frankly, users that think these films do not deserve high ratings, have never seen them before they came to BD. Films are rated on their previous examples at times and most of the CC collection has had a previous version somewhere released. Newer films, that do not have a previous release, are generally judged by what was seen on the big screen. Perspective needs to be brought to the table at times.

Absolutely. Very well said!

In fact, this is the very reason why Criterion are one of the best distributors in North America - it is not because they repeatedly manage to meet some miraculous standards; it is because their team of professionals consistently takes into consideration a variety of different factors allowing them to produce transfers that replicate as best as possible the (best) element that is available to work with.

It is very unfortunate to see that there are people out there who do not understand the limitations a release such as Stagecoach has, or Yojimbo, and grasp the concept that a reviewer cannot approach the two releases mentioned above with the same mindset and expectations as he/she would approach Avatar or Toy Story.

As jcs913 writes above, perspective definitely needs to be brought to the table.

Hey, since we got you in here, any news on when we'll see a Breathless review (or even The Thin Red Line for that matter)? Love the reviews, keep up the great work

There was a technical delay with Breathless - not on my end - but I am told that the disc is in transit. The Thin Red Line will be up late tomorrow night.

I anxious to read the The Thin Red Line review as well. I really wish Criterion had the rights to 3 of my favorites from the 80's: Thief, At Close Range and The Mosquito Coast. They all got absolute crap treatment on DVD.

Thief is great. I'd love to see that movie get some sort of Blu release. Or even another old school James Caan movie, The Gambler.

Anybody see this Lou Reed/Susan Boyle crap around the news?

It's funny reading comments on articles around the web. All these "Boyle" fans (media zombies/talent show lovers) are bashing Reed, saying things like "Never heard of him, but he can't sing and Boyle can out sing him!". Yes, she can "out sing him"! Who cares. Sounds like he can "out write" her if she cries because she can't use someone else's art.

For one thing, why do people think Lou Reed songs are great to sing on talent shows? Do they even know wtf his songs are about? It's like putting Walk on the Wild Side on the radio all over again.

And why does non-educated people open there mouths bashing someone like Reed, when they never heard of him and are praising a talent show "15 mins of Fame" woman? This is just like films too. Do people not learn history and just believe music and films started after 1990 or something?

Ditto. Thief needs an anamorphic transfer bad.

Ditto. Thief needs an anamorphic transfer stat.

Words can't really describe how excited I am for The Thin Red Line to finally be getting the proper home video treatment. Malick's films, TTRL in particular, were life-changing for me, and really altered my perception of cinema as a whole. Stoked to see the review tomorrow night!

I like the headlines, 'Lou Reed makes Susan Boyle cry' 'Lou Reed spoils Susan Boyle's Perfect Day.' I'm sure if the price was right he would allow it, although he did say he wasn't a fan. Maybe he heard her version of 'Wild Horses.'

The great thing about Criterion, as you point out, is they focus on making the films look and sound how they were intended. That's one thing I love about Criterion. Everlasting Moments, for example, is one of the best examples of a film looking exactly how it was supposed to look and the result is incredible. Paris, Texas, while looking and sounding better than ever and representing the intended look and sound of the film, doesn't mean it deserves high ratings. You have an apparent difficulty separating appreciation for restoration/film's intention and somewhat meaningless technical quality number ratings. They're distinct entities.

Thank you for showing us all here that a slick looking Transformers 2 movie is more deserving of a good PQ rating then a Carol Reed, Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick, Jim Jarmusche, Nagisa Oshima film that is mastered to the complete perfection as the way they wanted their films to look....where do you live? Ill buy you a midnight screening ticket to Harry Potter 7.1 for your great insight

Anyone who can get 50+ year-old film stock, where every frame is potentially filled with artifacts and dirt and scratches, and could possibly catch on fire, and may, in fact, not run at the correct speed or miss a frame or contain the correct audio, to look and sound as good as their copy of The Third Man deserves high technical ratings - because it took a helluva lot of technical work.
