Not the Visconti film that you're discussing, but FWIW, THE DAMNED (1947) is available on Warner Archive Collection, knowing since I just watched for the first time a couple nights ago. Starting to run out of submarine films to watch.

Saw Tampopo in a theater the other day. I'd seen it ages ago and remembered it being lots of fun, but I was surprised that it's just a downright good movie. Is there any other Juzo Itami available/worth checking out, or was this a one-off success for him?

You can sign up for a free month trial, but you have to email them to cancel.

There's a few good titles on there too, and most of it, if not all, is HD.

Of the ones I've seen, Tampopo is the best by a good margin. Second place would be Minbo--or the Gentle Art of Japanese Extortion, followed by (in descending order) A Taxing Woman, The Funeral, and A Taxing Woman 2.

I will admit that there's a bit of a sameness to Itami's films, but if his comedic style works for you, you'd probably enjoy all of the above to some degree.

A Taxing Woman

and

A Taxing Woman Returns

There's a scene in Returns where Yakuza involved in a real estate
scam are tormenting this tenant. I found it amusing.

Can't wait for Stalker! And if they also release Come and See and Desert Hearts this year I will be a really happy bunny!

Trivia: I saw two films in one evening at Manchester's Corner House in the 80s - one was Come and See, the other was either Desert Hearts or After Hours

One of my favorite bands, the Canadian supergroup, 'The New Pornographers' (featuring the wonderful Neko Case ) just announced their newest album coming out in April

And uh, to make this post Criterion related, the band name was inspired by the Imamura film The Pornographers (1966), which Criterion will hopefully upgrade one day.

Fingers crossed for a tour with Neko. I've seen them both ways and her inclusion is pretty essential.

I wish it wasn't so difficult to find a replacement case for Chungking Express. I have the digipack edition, but I wish it was in the clamshell. Those early digipacks are really rinky-dink.

Not one of the best sites out there, but an interesting list of someone's opinion of the 40 best Japanese films. Healthy amount of Criterion selections in there. Any personal favorites they missed (or I suppose any inclusions that you hate)?

My first thought looking it over was that it's sad that the Teshigahara set is oop.

Yeah, I saw an article from the Chicago Tribune that said she'll be there for the 2 local shows on April 19, and 21st. I don't know if that carries over to the other show dates around US and Canada. They're playing NYC on April 26. I've never seen them live, so I'm going to try and get tickets.

I'm still hoping for an upgrade for La strada. That's my favorite Fellini. I just don't like the later Fellini's, but that's what Criterion seems to want to release on blu.

The only problem with that is they do not include the artwork to go with it.

You have to request it through orders@criterion.com.

In the past when I've need a replacement I sent the money via PayPal and included in the note which case I needed. This gets their attention.

Mary Tyler Moore's death this weekend got me to wondering if Criterion could get their hands on Ordinary People (1981).

I saw this movie about 20 years ago. It was quite heartbreaking in so many ways, and I always admired how Mary Tyler Moore went against type to play her role.
