I'd also like La Strada but I really want Juliet of the Spirits -a film that introduced me to Fellini and a much later film of his that is seldom mentioned-Ginger and Fred which I find both charming and sentimental.

On the subject of Italian directors: I'd like to see more De Sica. I don't know who has the rights to Shoeshine or The Garden of the Finzi-Continis but Miracle In Milan was once a Criterion Laserdisc title so maybe there's hope on that one.

I've never tried it with OOP movies. It's worth a try if they somehow have OOP Godard films on hand when Anna Karina visits.

How many of you lads and lassies have a scanner and plenty of time on your hands?

I need to really get around to updating the list of artwork we need for the database.

I tried to get a replacement insert and booklet for Army of Shadows and Leon Morin, Priest a couple months ago, and was told they were unavailable since the titles are OOP.

Can anyone elaborate on their love for Stalker? I saw it once like ten years ago but wasn't into it. However, watching new restorations on a projector is really a whole new experience and I don't know if I should give it another shot, I don't have Filmstruck so it'd prob have to be a blind buy when it comes out. I'd love to hear from others who hold it in high regard

I don't know much about this stuff but I just assumed the later titles are easier to license and/or have had restorations undertaken.

The early stuff is clearly where it's at over I Clowns etc.

RIP John Hurt

Actor John Hurt has reportedly passed away today at the age of 77 after battling pancreatic cancer. I'll forever remember John Hurt as the unfortunate passenger who becomes the first victim in Ridley Scott's 1979 film, Alien, but I also loved his acting in films like The Proposition (2005), Midnight Express (1978), The Osterman Weekend (1983), The Elephant Man (1980), Heaven's Gate (1980), Contact (1997), Melancholia (2011), The Disappearance (1977), and, of course, the Harry Potter series.
Rest in peace.

I first became aware of John Hurt in The Naked Civil Servant, a BBC TV film based on Quentin Crisp's memoir. Hurt made so many great performances over the years. He will be missed. RIP.

It's a long-ass movie, and features a lot of walking around and talking, kinda like Lord of The Rings. And it's in some foreign language, what's not to like?

I'm terribly hurt (no pun intended) by this news of Mr. Hurt's death.

I just saw 1984 again recently and can't believe he wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for that performance!

The question is, will the forthcoming film Darkest Hour have to reshoot scenes since Hurt played Neville Chamberlain in that movie (and it's still being filmed)?

A shame since he just turned 77 five days ago too.

Thanks for everything, man.

Owl, you must also check out the incessantly creepy 10 Rillington Place. Besides Richard Attenborough’s bone-chilling turn as Christie it features an extremely nuanced performance by John Hurt.
I’d recommend getting the Indicator edition. It’s both cheaper and superior than its Twilight Time counterpart. Got mine only yesterday.

Highly, Highly Recommended!

Another great one passes away. I remember this film, haven't seen it in years. Personally, I feel his best performance was in The Elephant Man. He brought out John Merrick's humanity underneath all that makeup.RIP

This year is turning into a really shitty one for celebrity deaths. And we haven't even hit February yet.

For me it was his role of Caligula in the I, Claudius mini-series from the '70s. Even though he was in just a few episodes, his scenes were the highlights of the series for me. That was a wonderful series. Kind of the Downton Abbey of it's day as far as popularity goes. He was such a fine actor. I will miss him. RIP
