Hou's first entry into the Collection. Not what I was hoping for, but I'll take it.

I have a question for anyone who has seen or owns the Criterion for The Night Porter. Is it worth a blind buy or is it something I should watch first? I know it is a dark film and that doesn't bother me.

As someone who has blind bought nearly everything, I can't stress the importance of watching something beforehand instead.

Yeah I'm not a big blind buyer either. I have lucked out with Criterion blind buys though. I'm gonna give it a watch first.

Blind buying is one of the great joys of the hobby. I don't mean randomly, but specific directors, actors, genres, themes, etc.

I definitely agree with this. What you have to do though is make sure you watch them in a timely fashion so you don't have a giant backlog filling you with anxiety.

Sure, it's the perfect date movie.

May I also recommend - a glass of Château and perhaps blue cheese to go with it.

I am over the moon in love with The Assassin, but it's the only Hou I've seen. Any suggestions where to go from there?

Millennium Mambo, which may very well contain the greatest intro of any film.

Still waiting for a reasonable, to me at least, pricing for The Lady Vanishes, The 39 Steps, and The Man Who Knew Too Much. Not really willing to spend $28 that much for individual titles on Blu-ray anymore. $28 I wouldn't mind if it were a massive set.
YMMV.
Why $28? All those titles are well below that price at least 4 times every year.

Hard to say. I had a mixed reaction to it and if pressed I would probably have a hard time giving somebody a thumbnail sketch. Often I can say 'it's kind of like this and if you like that sort of thing it's a pretty good example of it' but in this case it's hard to say either one of those things.

Which is in no way a knock on the film itself. It won't be for a while but I definitely want to give it another look.

Agreed. I still watch things I've never seen on cable but that still pales a little compared to seeing something for the first time in a theater (which I hardly ever do) or on BD (which is the next best thing and can come pretty freaking close to a theatrical experience).

And can be ridiculously affordable. Granted, that's less the case in here where the 'cheap' price for a blind buy is somewhere around twenty bucks but that's still pretty affordable. It's just not as ridiculously affordable as paying like nine bucks for IT or $13ish for a WAC blind buy.

For me the anxiety comes from staring at literally hundreds of unwatched discs and not being able to find something I feel like watching at that particular moment.

And even then it's not really anxiety, I just feel like an idiot

Redeeming yourself after your Scorsese remark, Scott. You just see it? I remember you hadn't seen any Hou before.

Few months ago.

I'm not entirely sure I appreciated the film fully as I didn't really know what to expect. However, I was rather impressed, especially by the soundtrack.

It goes down better a second time, although my professor who is a Hou fanatic thinks I'm bizarre for holding it so high within his outstanding filmography. That opening sequence is perfection, however, and I don't think even its detractors can deny that.

Surprised that you loved The Assassin. I tend to see people scoff at it, as it's their first Hou and they don't know what they're in store for. If you want something similar, pretty much check out any other Shu Qi collaboration. Three Times is always a safe bet, I'd say, and it's easy to find.

And all three are in the four-film Hitchcock box available in criterion.com that sells for $48 during flash sales, which are the exact same as the individual releases + a box: https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/11...ssic-hitchcock
