I guess the way to put it is that in each case, I prefer the one I saw more recently.

On edit: Actually, I suppose the way to look at it is that I like both versions of both movies, and see them in the same way as liking two different productions of a stage play/musical.

Paranormal Activity was produced by Steven Jay Schneider, who's also the main editor of 1001 Movies You Must see Before You Die. I'm sure its inclusion in edition after edition is purely on merit.

That year was particularly significant for SF/fantasy films. The ones that leap immediately to mind include E.T., Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Poltergeist, Blade Runner, The Thing, Tron, The Road Warrior, and of course Airplane II: The Sequel.

[Show spoiler]1) Great films were ALWAYS far and few between.

2) Lots of challenging films are made today. They simply aren't the films that people talk about and that get advertising.

3) Nearly 1,000 films are released each year in the US alone.

4) This is an entirely new era. Film in 1975 didn't have to compete, for instance, with massive TV shows that had big budgets and even larger crowds (think "Game of Thrones").

5) People forever believe that things were better in "the old days." I'm sure there was a great number of people in the 70s who believed that cinema had gone to hell, and if only we could have the days of the 40s-50s back, everything would be great. As a sports fan, I am acutely aware of this sort of thing.

6) Again, the Oscars are not about deconstructing the most complex cinema of any given year. It's a celebration. Of Hollywood. One of the best 2016 films I saw was a documentary about STUXnet -- Zero Days. How many people have even heard of it, let alone seen it? Is it going to get an Oscar nom for Best Picture? No. Is it incredibly powerful? Yes. Should everyone see it? Absolutely. But it's not the sort of film that we will be talking about when the Oscars come into play.

7) Say what you want about my opinion, and many have ( ), but I have so far ranked The Neon Demon as the best picture of 2016. Total Oscar noms = 0. Heck, Total Oscar noms for Nocturnal Animals = 1. Do I feel this is the downfall of Western Civilization? No. Not at all. I just realize that the sorts of films that will be celebratory are not those sorts of films.

8) You know how many Academy Award Nominations that Jean-Luc Godard has received in his 57 year career as a director? 1. And it was an Honorary Award.

In the 36th Awards, the year that Le Mépris (Contempt) would have been up, Tom Jones won. The other nominees? America America, Cleopatra, How the West Was Won, Lilies of the Field.

And someone wants to tell me that those choices are somehow better, in relation to Contempt, than whatever films someone things should be nominated this year in relation to La La Land or Manchester by the Sea or Arrival or whatever?

Yeah, stuff was SO MUCH better in the past.
I've been saying this for years:

People forget or ignore a simple fact with respect to the Oscars. While the brouhaha (good and bad) surrounding the awards seems to suggest that these are Proclamations From On High, the Oscars are nothing more than the consensus of opinion of a bunch of people. While they may be people who work in the industry, and thus theoretically have opinions more informed than those of us who don't, they're still people with their own likes and dislikes and biases and prejudices and agendas.

They definitely do recant their recent selections pretty fast though. It feels like half of them get axed over time.

There's an online checklist that lists all of the films mentioned in every edition of this book.

I've seen 562 of the movies.

Absolutely. Just because the Oscars award a movie "Best Picture" doesn't necessarily mean it's the best movie of the year in all aspects. The very first Oscars had a double-barrel Best Picture, one that was won by Wings that recognized it as the best film from a production standpoint, and one that was given to Sunrise that recognized it as the best film from an artistic standpoint. That was a good distinction and it was a shame it was discarded because some people may think a film is better as a piece of art (particularly if they're a performer who is more artistically inclined), while some people may think something is good from a technical standpoint particularly if they themselves are a technical crew member. Who knows the where and whys that someone decides to vote for a film to receive an Oscar, and I'm sure it often comes down to voting for friends, the one movie they've seen that was nominated, etc. The Oscars are fun but there's really no reason for people to feel outraged that something they like didn't win or wasn't nominated.

Wow, I had no idea they were doing a remake of the Beguiled.

I feel like the Criterion community has a great ability to will films into existence in the collection. Mullholland Dr, Fantastic Planet, Ghost World, and a few others but the works of Sofia Coppola need to be our next project.

I prefer the remake. The original suffered from Kim Darby-a terrible actress and Glen Campbell who was even worse. Their performances ruined the original for me.

Don Siegel's original 1971 version of The Beguiled is a truly great film, and I rejoiced the day that I added it to my Blu-ray collection. Clint Eastwood did not typically star in "Southern gothic" movies, and that's one of the reasons why I love this offbeat masterpiece.

I rolled my eyes at first when I learned that a remake was underway, but Sofia Coppola's direction and the amazing cast have my curiosity now.

When it comes to Coppola films entering the Collection, I'm still hoping for Criterion to push Lost in Translation through.

Marie Antoinette was just given a sub-par BD-R release that I won't even bother ordering, although I like the film.
(I need to clarify that I like the film, but I don't like the fact that, since the release of the soundtrack, Siouxsie Sioux plays "Hong Kong Garden" with the newer intro instead of playing the original punk intro.)

Oh, I thought Kim Darby did an okay job but Hailee Steinfeld was far superior in the remake. Glen Campbell was terrible though. It may sound like a cop out but I like both versions of True Grit. They both follow the same story quite closely with only a few deviations. The original just feels like a run-of-the-mill John Wayne western though, while the remake feels like more of an "event" movie.

Also, with regard to Sofia Coppola's remake of The Beguiled...

I wonder how the
[Show spoiler]turtle murder
is going to be shown in the remake. Times are different now, and audience sensibilities are different.

[Show spoiler]Poor Randolph's death
is one of the most devastating in movie history. Hopefully
[Show spoiler]he is spared
in Coppola's version.

Wow, that was the last thing I expected to see under the spoiler alert, considering the film is rife with depictions and / or suggestions of
[Show spoiler]sex with underage girls, incest, sexual assault against females including a suggestion by McBurney that he rape a black woman, female sexual aggression and jealousy that leads to cutting off a man's legs and his ultimate murder.
Let's just say that the original film really hits some modern day hot button issues.

If you want to make that as your argument then fine, but don't be changing what I wrote in your quote of mine because I would never use anything as lazy and stupid as "SJW".

There's no need for one, the Cohen release is fantastic and they own the rights anyway.
