Let's just say that the original film really hits some modern day hot button issues.
Modern day audiences will call the movie out for the
[Show spoiler]turtle murder
before they call it out for the other stuff. Trust me on this.

Naw man, only if there's any suggestion whatsoever that
[Show spoiler]an actual turtle was harmed or mistreated during filming. If they use CGI or whatever phony looking piece of rubber they used in the original, it'll be fine. I don't remember anyone complaining about O Brother Where Art Thou's depiction of a toad being squashed and thrown against a tree.

ANY Sofia Coppola films are welcome to the EXTREME. She's easily one of my favorite working directors. A box set would make me squeal like an 8th grade girl.

Not that I'm saying there's any chance of that happening. Just the result.

I practically worship the woman.

If you're multi-region and are interested, this recent is quite decent too. The four disc has an exclusive OST CD too. Both the Criterion and Studio Canal Vintage Classics have exclusive extras. But the Vintage Classics release is from a 4K restoration.

That release is region free so it doesn't matter if you're multi-region.

No it doesn't. It's a completely region free release, implying it plays on all players, not just multi-region ones.

That 4 disc Third Man is oop, so find it now if you want it. Those oop Third Men get pricey.

How is Milred Pierce? I just read the review on this site. I've never heard of this movie and I love Film Noir.

It's excellent. The first half of the film isn't really all that noirish. It's really more of a typical era melodrama (including Joan Crawford in all her Joan Crawford glory). But once the noir elements take center stage they're awesome. There are some really classic b&w images in there.

If you like that sort of thing it's probably a pretty safe blind buy and it's definitely something you should try to see regardless of whether you decide to buy it. TCM has been showing it on/around Mother's Day the past few years and their copy is pretty good. If nothing else try to catch it there.

Awesome thanks! Yeah I'll definitely at least give it a watch. If I don't blind buy I'll rent the blu ray from Netflix. I've had a lot of luck with blind buying Criterion titles and I very rarely blind buy.

I love how much Wong Kar-wai has been trending lately.

In other news, I'm pretty sure I'm watching Happy Together for the third or fourth time in the past six months.

Got excited there, once again, for just a moment. So it's the oop 4-disc issue that was region-free? The one-disc release still shows it as being region B/2 on the Amazon.UK website so I presume that's still the case? Anyone?

[Show spoiler] Any of those five films would be the best American film released since 2010 if made today. Other films from '75: "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "The Passenger", "Night Moves", "The Man Who Would Be King", "Salo", "Dersu Uzala", "Three Days of the Condor", "Love and Death", "Shampoo", "The Mirror", "Jeanne Dielman", "Seven Beauties", "Picnic at Hanging Rock", "Rollerball", "The Day of the Locust", "Inserts", etc.
And '72, '73, '74 and '76 are pretty close.
No disagreement here, though I tend to think of '79 just as fondly. Stalker, Quadrophenia, All That Jazz, Apocalypse Now, Alien, Manhattan, Kramer vs Kramer, etc. just to name a few from that year's top tier, Oscar nominees notwithstanding...

I watched Dreams a few nights ago and its making me want to explore Akira Kurosawa's other films now, esp. High and Low. I have so many of his Criterion films still sealed because I haven't been able to get in the right mood to watch them. Why can I never get into a Kurosawa mood?! I admit, he's not one of my favorite directors, but Dreams is one beautiful film that only gets better in the 2nd half, when it touches on dystopian themes. The only "dream" or sequence in the film I didn't like so much was "The Blizzard", because it was a bit ponderous. This was the second time I had seen the movie Dreams, but it had been at least 7 or 8 years.

A lot of the stuff they put there doesn't mean they will be released by Criterion, especially if they don't have the C logo on them.

You can check all that was recently added here:
