You are in for a treat. The "Charles Laughton Directs THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER" is a must-watch supplement. Enjoy.

Doubt it since they wouldn't be allowed to do extras.

I actually think MGM might release it themselves since they forced Arrow to release the old disc in their recent boxset.

Am I the only one who thinks the On the Waterfront Blu-ray could look better picture-wise? I just re-watched it tonight and I never had any issues with the quality before, but it seems noticeable now.

I also noticed an issue with the subtitles around the one hour mark where Terry bangs on Edie's door and begs her to open up. The word "please" is spelled "pease".

These issues aside, the film remains one of the greatest of all-time and my opinion stands that Brando was the greatest actor to ever live.

Lots of people complained about it, it was one of the first titles I saw people talking about compression issues for.

I actually went on Criterion's website after watching the film and checked its specs. I was shocked that it was a 4K restoration as it doesn't look like one.

Again, I'm not sure why I'm noticing it now. Perhaps it's my 4K TV that makes everything much more visually appealing. Or perhaps it's because I've seen much better 4K restorations and I'm measuring this film against those.

I'm a little concerned about that too. I've just replaced my 10 yr old tv and have only fed it newer films so far. I need to pick something like Rules of the Game to test it.

Brando was terrific but Spencer Tracy was the greatest actor.

You can see caps on caps-a-holic, the German Sony disc has slightly better grain resolving but nothing dramatic (the comparison of the 1.66:1 versions at least).

Yeah, that's what happens when you don't future-proof your releases and people upgrade the size and quality of their TVs or even projectors.

Unfortunately, this type of "can't really notice it in motion" forgiving mentality, which seems to have had zero impact on the various sites' review scores is what kept us from having future-proof Criterion releases over the years:

Releases which would've otherwise been easily fixable with better encoding. Now we're stuck with countless Criterion blu ray releases that God's knows whether they'll be released ever again.

If people (and review scores) complained right away, all this could've been avoided.

It's a shame that this site never reviewed Eureka's Shoah, because I'd love to see what score it would get after the visibly flawed Criterion's perfect 5/5. The fact that Eureka was forced to have more or less the same filesize and bitrate makes the quality gap even more startling.

Holy crap. I just watched Nashville for the first time. I was mesmerized by everything about this film. The locations, the people, the terrible singing lol...just everything. But that ending. Im not going to give anything away but to people that have seen it...what happened? I was left with so many questions.

So many questions

I like when a director challenges you to think outside the box but not on that many things. That last twelve minutes left me with literally ten questions right off the top of my head.

Wow Altman got me with this one....I guess that's why Altman is one of the GOATS!

Barbara Harris singing "It Don't Worry Me" while everything is collapsing around her has duel meanings IMO. It highlights that, even with the struggle of life, there always exists a sense of essential optimism, even in small moments. In the more cynical reading, one could interpret the ending as the truth that very few people empathize with any kind of hurt or struggle until it affects them personally. It's one of my favorite endings of all-time. I hope I didn't spoil anything, as I didn't indicate what actually happens at the end of the film.

But doesn't that idea of "not noticeable in motion" have more to do with screen size and not so much the tech being used?

On the waterfront was an, at times, pretty abysmal DVD , too. I haven't seen it via the CC blu.

Well this sucks with what I'm reading about with On the Waterfront as I was going to rewatch this soon. I've only watched mine once and thought it looked great. I'll have to see for myself.

Also I wanted to mention this. One of the stores I go to that I buy my Criterions from now lock them in a glass display case due to all the theft problems they've had with them. They said 2 a day on average! That pisses me off that Criterion lost out on all of that money.

Hmm I'm pretty sure Criterion themselves wouldn't have lost any money from this.

I'm really trying, but, for the life of me, I cannot notice any difference at all in the screenshots for any of the above comparisons, except for Ali: Fear Eats the Soul. All of the others look pretty much identical to my eyes.

I'm not trying to be snarky. I honest-to-goodnessly cannot tell a difference with most of those.

Being a technically-ignorant movie fan is actually pretty fun, though.

Yeah I just threw my On the Waterfront in and watched some scenes and it still looks great to me. Naturally filmic and greatly detailed. Maybe I don't know what to be looking for though and not sure if its strictly with 4K TVs.

Edit: Ok now Im watching Mildred Pierce and there's a drastic difference in detail and clarity. That might be what the issue is.

I would think someone going into the Eureka or Arrow thread and posting a similar statement would be bad manners, and I would more than likely take that post offline as provocative. If you have an issue with a lack of a review then please PM the mods and we will direct your concern to the appropriate site personnel.

Please consider the language of your posts here in the future. Your statement coming from someone associated with another label is needlessly provocative and of the type that in the past has tended to ignite fanboy wars in threads. I will not tolerate this in any thread.

We as film fans appreciate all the labels who bring us fantastic releases on home video. I cannot thank Eureka and Arrow enough for the great releases they provide to the movie-loving public. I am sure the majority of us are ecstatic with all the great work they do, just as we appreciate the works of Criterion, Twilight Time, Kino Lorber, and all of the others boutique labels.

Respectful debate on quality of the same film released from two different labels is a slippery slope. On the one hand it can be fun, informative, and interesting on a subjective and technical level and I am sure many appreciate the conversation. On the other hand, it can also lead to heated opinions, thread derailing, and uninformed statements from members who may not have access to all the information, with the end result that no one gains from the arguments generated back and forth by passionate label defenders.

Thanks for your understanding on this matter.
