New blu-ray from 4K scan is more likely than a 4K disk. Isn't Toho working on 4k restorations of Seven Samurai and the Gojira films? The news came out around this time last year. Maybe they're done.

Criterion haven't re-released any individual releases so far on Blu-ray. I'd be surprised if they started now. There's several movies that have gotten newer restorations after their respective CC releases.

Taking this potential fact out of the picture, I'd say there is a good chance that Criterion will start releasing and re-releasing certain films in 4K with the increase in 4K technology and innovations and a continued demand for the release of films in this newer format.
Who knows? Criterion hasn't made a peep about whether they'll get around to issuing any titles in 4K/UHD. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. They dragged their heels somewhat getting into DVD, then dragged them some more about encoding them anamorphically, then dragged them again getting into Blu-ray.

But I think the comment I was responding wasn't asking about Seven Samurai coming out in 4K, but being reissued on Blu-ray from a new 4K master. While I think fans of the film (myself very much included) would love to see the film in the best version possible, the current Blu-ray is so damn good, it seems like their efforts would be put to better use upgrading more of their so-far-DVD-only titles to Blu-ray.

Will Criterion ever pull the plug on DVD? I know it doesn't affect people on this site but how many people still buy non-Eclipse Criterions on DVD?

I guess the answer is even if it's Blu 90/DVD 10 - DVDs are really cheap to produce.

Libraries still purchase DVDs. That's supposedly one of the reasons why Criterion fell back into separate BD and DVD releases after going dual-format for a while.

I'm probably getting a little ahead of myself, but when is the next Criterion flash sale usually?

What percentage of Criterion's annual revenue would you guys guess comes from the flash and B&N sales? I can't think of the last time I bought a Criterion at normal price.

Just obtained my first few titles, and was curious... do y'all organize them by title, or spine number? I'm sure this matters more for larger Criterion collections, but wanted to see what the general consensus was. Thanks for the input!

My entire DVD+Blu-ray collection is organized alphabetically by title. Criterions are mixed in.

By packaging, then by language, then chronologically (with a little fudging allowed to keep films by the same director together).

Anything else is madness.

Somewhat significant... Say about 30% maybe.

Although I've seen and know people who don't mind paying near full price.

I have them lying around in various piles throughout my house. Organised autobiographically.

All of my films are alphabetized regardless of studio.

None of my local libraries carry blu rays. They are all dvds only.
