Because they switched carriers, I ended up being slapped with a $93CAD import fees charge on top of all of it. This likely would not have been the case with USPS (it's actually never happened to me before).

I decide to write them an email, in the off chance they would feel like recognizing their mistake. Instead, I get a reply that tells me I likely got "confused" with the exchange rate, which wasn't the case, and invites me to keep supporting them in the future. I'm rather insulted...
They didn't switch carriers on you. There's a confirmation screen stating the type of shipment method that will be used based on your order. I noticed this during checkout from the last flash sale; the shipping method USPS vs UPS to Canada is determined by product weight.

You confirmed UPS for this order with 18 items. It states $19.95 + $3.95 additional item and it provided you with a tracking number that will arrive in a couple days. The regular shipping for USPS is $9.95 + $2.95 additional item, it doesn't provide a tracking number and will take about a week to arrive. The import fees that were charged on the UPS order is a result of Criterion not charging you any sales tax; it's simply $20 per title plus shipping if you take another look at your invoice.

Your best bet for future flash sales from Criterion is to break up your order. The downside is you don't receive everything at once, but on the plus you will save on shipping and possibly skip on the import charges if it's not inspected at the border. I hope this helps clear everything up for you.

  1. Criterions - arranged by spine number, regardless of format.
  2. Ditto Eureka
  3. Ghibli in release order
  4. Disney, BFI, general anime, steelbooks, TV shows, classical music, non-classical music - alphabetical, regardless of format
  5. Boxsets - on the top or in front of rows
  6. Everything else: alphabetical

Unfortunately I didn't have enough space so some rows are double stacked, which I hate. But at least I can find stuff now

You didn't mention Stalker!! (OK, I know we all knew it was coming, but...). So excited over this one
I use alphabetical in order to find them easily. But I have these sections:
Digibooks
Criterion - plastic
Criterion - paper
Flicker Alley
Musicals
Concerts
Animation
Documentaries
TV
Everything else
and a James Bond section ;-)

I'm enjoying seeing (and learning) how people store/display their collections. My latest "solution" for shrinking shelf space, is to move related titles out of the main shelf area to a space of their own, as the shelf space warrants it (shrinks).

FWIW, my collection has evolved as follows (all sorted alphabetically within each grouping).:

Everything on one shelf
Criterions on their own shelf
Twilight Time on their own shelf
Box sets (and TV) on top of the shelf (excluding Criterions)
Disney animation grouped together
All other animation grouped together
Beatles-related grouped together
Harryhausens grouped together
John Waynes grouped together
Thunderbean animation grouped together

With regard to Straw Dogs, I asked Mister Lime on the Kino thread if any other ABC/Selznick titles had gone to Criterion, and received this reply:

I suppose those previously released by Criterion - Rebecca, Spellbound, Notorious, Indiscretion of an American Wife / Terminal Station - are a decent bet, though it's possibly there might also be some 'new' titles in there.

I didn't get the impression that the Hitchcock's were part of that smaller package, but you never know I guess. I do think Criterion will ultimately release them.

As much as I love Criterion's unique and artistic packaging, this one may be a little too eccentric.

And we lose the amazing Criterion box art for Pan's Labyrinth with this release.

Small price to pay, though, for getting three amazing films at a great price.
I don't think I put it on the shelf any differently than other releases. Ill have to check when i get home.

Question The Criterion Collection

I'm new to The Criterion Collection as I bought my 1st 2 when they had the 50% off flash sale!

My question is how many sales do they have/when, are they sporadic/quarterly or...?

I am revisiting The Before Trilogy as well as Waking Life.

Should I also check out Slacker? Does that complement the films above or is it more of a prototype for them?

Slacker is my favorite Linklater film(still!) and it's a lot closer to Waking Life than any of his other films. If you like that, you'll like Slacker.

As for the more specific question, 'complement' or 'prototype', I'd say 'complement' of the two choices. Waking Life is a good, more ambitious, but ultimately inferior follow-up to Slacker IMO.

If you want to compliment The Before Trilogy, just watch Eric Rohmer movies. He's a big influence on Linklater and most of his movies are just people talking in the French countryside. Sunrise felt very Rphmer-esque when it came out in 1995 (I mean, it still does, but the influence back them felt very obvious).

I've never seen any Rohmer films, so appreciate the suggestion.

Hong Sang-soo is another director who is often compared to Rohmer, which is probably why I thought of Before Sunrise while watching Right Now, Wrong Then.

Rewatched both The Girls from Rochefort and Umbrellas of Cherbourg and had a great time.

I was lukewarm by Umbrellas the first time and I still feel some of it's technical aspects drag it down, but this time I was able to stop thinking on those and just getting into the emotional part of the story pretty easily so I can bump my rating to 8/10 .

Rochefort on the other side I was already a fan because of it's more typical musical structure and after listening many times to the songs my appreciation for them has just increased, it's full of silly story-lines like the one of Simone Dame and his name which oddly has some of the most emotionally effective songs in the film. 9/10

I watched them in this order which is the opposite than the first time I saw them, not sure if it had something to do.

I still have yet to watch another movie quite like Slacker.

I feel at times its a historical document of Austin, TX more than an actual film. Which makes this such a unique "film". I cannot think of another movie that feels and looks like Slacker with all of its serendipitous themes and characters. It's quite amazing in my opinion.
