if Criterion were to ever decide to enter the 4K market, I don't think there'd be a better title to go into it than with The Tree of Life. One of the "best" 4K titles out there right now (as far as supposed PQ) is The Revenant. Lubezki.

I think it'd sell a ton. I'd be all over that.

I bet Samsara or Visitor would be glorious on 4K

Personally, as much as I want TToL in the collection, I would happily wait if I knew they were to release on 4K :P

I'd put 4 Months on the confirmed list since our confirmation is in the same vein as Lost in America.

I would consider Silence of the Lambs a rumor as Kino rep MisterLime said the new 4K remaster is with another label, and Filmstruck had it on their Criterion channel with a Criterion logo, and the commentary track (previously OOP). Rebecca, Notorious, and Spellbound are also rumored.

They also just published this on their Instagram:

"This weekend at L'immagine Ritrovata film restoration laboratory in Bologna, Italy!"

So I guess a 4K remaster is coming from Criterion.

Agreed, but I'm trying to keep newsletter clues as rumors.

We all remember how that ill, sore, possum didn't turn out to be Midnight Cowboy.

I actually saw that a few minutes ago.

If they're going to start re-releasing films on Blu-ray with new restorations à la The Battle of Algiers and Chungking Express, I wonder how the public is going to react.

A new Silence of The Lambs and Battle of Algiers would be wonderful especially if they came to CC UK.
Isn't Straw Dogs out already?

Probably not well. "I already bought the movie, why should I buy it again?"
But I never understood this approach. If you're happy with the product you have, then don't double-dip, it's that simple. And if you're not, then do, especially considering new 4K and 2K remasters are most probably going to be the definitive versions of these films.
I would gladly double-dip on Chungking Express or, for example, The 400 Blows, if they remastered that.

I don't think the complaint will be that per say.

I feel a lot will argue that X film has not been released on Blu-ray but Criterion is going to re-release the same film already available.

I mean, I get it. You already paid for what you thought was going to be the best. Now there's a better.

But still, it's only a sliver of sympathy, since they're complaining about getting an entirely optional better.

(And for those wondering what's up when you click on that link and see Taipe Story cannisters, it's one of IG's new albums. The Algiers cannisters are the next image, and you have to click the little arrow that appears on the right edge of the image when you hover, not the arrow that stays just to the right of the image and takes you to the next in their timeline.)

I can't wait to pick up the new restoration, though. It was one of my favorite new-to-me movies of last year. The first time I went to see it, at my local Landmark after it had played a few weeks, there were about 5 people in the theater, including me and my friend. The second time, at my local arthouse for the last of three showings, it was sold out with a rush line! So I'm looking forward to picking up the new restoration and seeing it again, as I was already considering importing it if the Italian release once it and comparisons come out. All the better if it's from Criterion.

It's probably gonna be both. BTW, there's an article from David Kalat (the guy who does great commentaries) from last year about double-dipping.

That's why you have to do basic research before buying something.

I think these restorations would appeal to a small subset of an already small subset (Criterion blu ray buyers), and half of those will complain about the color temps being wrong

Now, if they're going to start announcing UHD upgrades, why that's a horse of a different color.

I'm not sure how someone thinking about buying Criterion's blu when it came out in 2011 was supposed to research that a 4K restoration would be done in 2016 and released in 2017...

But I think we're one the same side of this argument anyway, if you're linking to Kalat's article? Which article I think makes all the salient points about why complaining about upgrades on the same format is ridiculous anyway.
