Would like The Passenger. Zabriskie Point though is a terrible movie.

If Criterion ever got around to releasing Zabriskie Point, it would easily jump into my top 10 or 15 most watched discs. Im a sucker for that period and it's just such a visual delight above all else. Heavy handed? Lugubrious? Self indulgent? Sure. It's all those things, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

Also. It has the single best explosion in all Cinema.

I would love for them to do The Thin Man. An all time favorite and would welcome all the bio work about this film that the usually provide in their extras.

Excellent movie! Would you recomend the sequels? They're often on TCM but I have never gotten around to watching them.

Not necessarily. If the marks are there for the duration of the shot there would be no matching information from "clean" frames to use to erase the lines.

Those black cracks are hairs that were caught in the film gate.

Yes, and "hair" is a nickname. They're actually fine scrapings of celluloid as it passes through the camera. During a professional film shoot, the AC (Assistant Cameraman) will "check the gate" after every scene's takes before moving on, because if there's a hair in the gate, you have no idea how many takes were ruined and you have to reshoot.

This has been Things That Make You Go Hmmm...

I think it would be cool if they released all six in a set. Would gladly move on my old Warner DVD set. I kind of lump all of those movies together in my mind.

Just moved. Got a new shelf. Set up said shelf. Got to deep into the end of putting up my Criterions and the shelf came crashing down on my head. Movies everywhere out of order. This is the worse night ever for me...

Maybe this is a sign to fully "go digital"?

Nice to see that Mr. Anderson and Criterion may be diversifying their business interests, but, stir-fry?

I think that usually restorers don't try to remove the "hair" in the gate since it was part of the original filming. If I remember correctly Blow-up has a scene with some pretty bad gate debris, it will be interesting to see if that is still there when I watch the BD. Also what would they do with the several Tex Avery cartoons that used this as part of a gag? (as from 3:50 to 4:21 in this cartoon - be forewarned, some insensitive racial/ethnic stereotypes here)

I would. The second installment has Jimmy Stewart in a supporting role and the rest of them are just fun entertainment for me. However, like many runs, the first is still my favorite of the lot. I would also recommend reading Hammett's book (well, actually, all his books) as it is surprisingly like the movie in its wit.

Has anyone seen Personal Shopper? And if so, did you like Clouds of Sils Maria? I'm debating on seeing it, but I really was left cold with that film.

Finally after having the same old TV for the last 6 years (a 40" Hitatchi ) I have FINALLY upgraded to a 4K UHD TV and my god, my Criterions looks even more phenomenal! Can't believe it took me so long too upgrade but I didn't realise Criterions looked THIS good lol!

Time to rewatch my entire collection! Starting with Antichrist of course!

TV also has Ambilight and it really makes the film expand out into my living room!

Wooo!

-

Actually, what can you guys recommend I rewatch/watch, like what do you guys think the BEST Criterion releases are in terms of quality/transfer/sound etc

Obviously I have my own list but be good to see what else you guys recommend incase I have missed them!

I think between both I preferred CLOUDS, but like most Assayas films I found it get messy in the latter sections. PERSONAL SHOPPER felt mixed between wanting to be two things. And Stewart I still feel is too wooden a performer, especially for a complex leading role like this one (found her successful in CLOUDS, though, but the shorter screen time and the nature of the character made her style work for her).

Some sequences in SHOPPER are effectively creepy, but the narrative is just too muddled to have the ending be impactful. Assayas is skillful, for sure, and has interesting ways of telling certain parts of this story (a large chunk of it is solely done through text message communication, for instance, and remains engaging to watch), but the writing lacks cohesion, and so I found myself struggling with this more than I would have liked.
