I tried, I honestly tried. But I'm of the camp that Sono is more crazy than talented (I imagine most people saying, "well, duh"). Why don't you play in Hell, Love Exposure and the others I've seen are kind of exhibits A1, A2, etc.

Guilty of Romance was, however, a fantastic buy, but I'm convinced that just says more about my tastes than his directorial prowess. With Sono it's all about finding a room in the insane asylum you both feel at home with

Yeah, it's playing here starting Friday. I think I may wait for the inevitable Criterion, solely because the difference in price will be negligible and I'll get a few extras.

But yeah, long story short is that only films I consider greatest of all-time (La Dolce Vita, Lost in Translation, Being There, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, etc.) stay in my collection.
Awesome explanation. "Keep what you love". What more needs to be said!

And what we love varies between everyone. You might love In the Mood for Love but I love Chungking Express (and I've seen/own both films). So you'd keep the former and I'd keep the latter. Nothing wrong there. We aren't comparing ourselves or our tastes to anyone else but ourselves! That's the hard thing collectors tend to forget... we shouldn't be competing with anyone. Being a diehard completist is exhausting and too much pressure.

Thank you for your short and succinct response on this.

I dunno. I imagine that pretty much everyone would "keep what they love", unless they were in desperate enough straits that they needed to sell off everything.

I keep what I love. I also keep what I like a lot, but don't necessarily love. I even keep what I kinda sorta somewhat like, because I might like it better the next time. I even keep things that I think are dumber than dirt, but still get a kick out of.

Absolutely perfect! That's exactly what I keep as well. I only buy films I know I'll want to keep unless it might be a very rare blind buy (which I hardly ever do) misfire and I'll never get rid of them.

Anybody have any insight on The Bridge or Everlasting Moments? My local record store has both Blu-Ray editions on sale for about $39 total (EM is cheaper at 15) but I haven't seen anything Wicki or Troell has ever done so I'm completely blind here.

I keep everything because...

A) I'm too lazy to sell stuff

B) I wouldn't get very much for it even if it wasn't too lazy to sell it

It seems incredibly simple in theory, but it can be extremely difficult.

Ever since I can remember I've always loved film. I used to watch my Disney VHS tapes religiously to the point that some of them started to wear. Sure, I owned the movies, but I never thought of it as a collection. Unfortunately, as I got older, I started loving the idea of owning a large collection of movies more than the movies themselves (a lot of people will deny it themselves, but I know for a fact that they do it too). Yes, I've always loved the medium (and I always will), but I started taking on the belief that the more movies I owned, the bigger movie fan I was. Another part was the idea that if I own every movie, I won't have to worry about ever tracking them down again. However, this was not the right mentality and it ate me alive to the point where I couldn't do it anymore.

It was a cool hobby. Despite consuming me, it allowed me to see a lot of films. I'd say the best thing I took out of it, though, was that it helped shape the person I am today. I can easily say that for the most part, my movie collection is very much in-line with my personality, beliefs, and interests.

As pessimistic as it may sound, I am not one to believe in happy endings. I'm not saying people are destined to be unhappy, but I feel like life is a series of disappointments more so than anything else. It's how we choose to react to these setbacks that ultimately shapes who we are, who we want to be, and how we want our future to be. Therefore, when I see the ending to a film like In the Mood for Love, which one could argue ends on a somber note, I find beauty in TLCW's character appearing to have gained an experience that ultimately yields internal peace and contention within himself.

Getting back to the point at hand, I have now taken the motto of quality over quantity. As I've already stated, I love the medium and will love it until the day I die, but I don't want to be the person who looks at a piece of art, does not feel moved by it, and continues to hang on to that picture so that the day may come when he or she feels something. Life's too short.

With every new movie I see, I do hope that I will love it enough to say that I want to own this film and make it a part of my movie collection. If I watch it and do not like it though, not much is lost. I save money and still get to say that I saw X film, thus crossing it off of my infinite watchlist.

Here is what I currently own. I can see a few more going but for the most part I would say it's solid and not much more can be done to it.

If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that there may be a lot of good movies, but not too many hold up on repeat viewings. I'm pretty sure I've rewatched certain movies and convinced myself that they were better than they were (because in my mind, I needed to love a "Citizen Kane" or "Picnic at Hanging Rock" in order to consider myself a film lover). However, repeat viewings have proved that my initial gut reaction was the right one.

I was a little ambivalent about The Bridge but I really enjoyed Everlasting Moments. And given how bleak it is, enjoyed is an odd choice of words but it really fits.

I think Love Exposure is his best, but I also was a fan of Tokyo Tribe. Of course TT was a manga adaptation so the "craziness" wasn't all Sono.

Have you seen any of his less off the wall stuff like The Land of Hope?

I've mentioned this before but one of my dream Criterion additions is a double feature of The Land of Hope and The Whispering Star.

Most movies, even great ones, aren't meant to be seen more than once every couple years. I see Solaris once every three or four years and that totally justifies the purchase
(And then some). I may only see North by Northwest once every seven years and that's fine too. But to be honest, most of the films in my collection won't be watched more than once every ten years.

I, like many others in the forum, love the luxury of being able to forget about a film we own on disc for years, then on a whim pick it up and enjoy as if it were new. Time does that ya know. For some, a vast selection is a burden, for others it's freedom. Freedom from searching which sub has a certain film, freedom from rebuying, freedom for renting it for a premium. Above all, freedom of choice.

The key is stretching your movie dollar to fit your tastes. I take advantage of $5 Tuesdays at the cinema when I'm desperate to see a new release. I use coupon codes at the redbox kiosk when I rent. I take advantage of streaming Subs. And I wait for the best price on 95% of the movies I seek to buy (and blind buy) even if it means waiting three years (which perfectly coincides with my fastest rewatch rate anyway).

All this is to say it's possible to try before you buy, have a big collection and do it on a budget.

I haven't seen The Land of Hope, but I see it's on Amazon. I'll be sure to check it out soon. Obviously with a guy that's directed a couple dozen features, you've got to see more than the 5 I've seen to get a firm grasp on him.

My motto is keep what I love or i might love someday. It ends up being very similar to keep everything, except you sell your copies of Extract and Deadpool.

I say we create a bluray buy calculator. The most rudimentary one would look like this, but hooooo boy. We can get crazy with the number of variables.
-----

So say you're 30 years old. You expect to live til 80. You only plan on revisiting a film every 5 years. You place a premium of $2 on every viewing..

((80-30)/5 years))*(2)= $20

Hey! That means your investment at the Barnes and Noble sale will pay off!

I feel sorry for you Scottie.

You got no loyalty.

Everything and everyone is expendable.

You'll end up in some ancient Vietnamese temple, whispering incomprehensible cries of pain and regret into a hole in the wall.

...wishing that you had never sold that copy of Picnic at Hanging Rock.
