While it's certainly possible - homage to me requires admission on behalf of the director/artist, or that the majority of the audience will recognize it without any. I don't see that here. Of course, it could simply be coincidental as well. It's always hit a wrong note for me though, because it is so similar.

This is correct. It really dumbs down the movie.

Watching Wim Wenders' Kings of the Road. I am impressed by how neat and cinematic Rudiger Vogler's "taking a dump in the desert" was. Imagine if he had diarrhea when he did it.

The first two Tears For Fears albums, The Hurting and Songs from the Big Chair, are quintessential for any music collection.

"Mad World" was the song that introduced me to the band back in 1983, when I saw the music video, but my all-time favorite Tears For Fears song is "Pale Shelter."

I watched the film recently too - in the commentary, Wenders talks about how it had been written in the script
[Show spoiler]for him to urinate, but after an off-the-cuff remark by Wenders when Rüdiger complained about not being able to go any more on a subsequent take, you have the end result that's in the film. It supposedly was pretty controversial at Cannes.
I watched the Road Trilogy all at once - a great and unforgettable cinematic journey.

I had The Hurting on cassette, and , of course, Songs From The Big Chair, too. I have their 20th Century Masters disc, but that hardly covers it. No The Working Hour, no Broken....I'll see if it's at Best Buy when I pick up Rogue One tomorrow. If not, I'm sure it's cheap on Amazon. Because SFTBC is one of the best albums of the 80s, hands down. Curt and Roland are incredible together.

I'm thinking about getting the MGM release of Rebecca. I think that will cause Criterion to announce it for June or July.

Friendly reminder request to fellow Criterion thread people. If you're going to discuss non Criterion films in the thread (especially current releases), please spoiler your discussion. Those of us avoiding discussion about those films before we see them should have a reasonable expectation that we won't see that discussion here. Thanks!

Just ordered The Music Room as my first Satyajit Ray film, and tbh my first ever indian film!

Quite excited to explore a new area of film and a culture I have neglected...

I did want to start with The Apu Trilogy but managed to get the above for only £15 so can't complain!

Is The Music Room a good starter film to introduce me to his films and this culture?

The Jules cover is terrible. Yuck!

I'd vouch for their third record as well seeing as it's singles are great. "Woman in Chains" is an all time fave.

To swing it back on topic, I'll play Six Degrees of Criterion separation:

"Woman in Chains"---> Boxing Helena---->Sherilyn Fenn---->Twin Peaks----> David Lynch. Whew.

I heard that was Ray Jackson's favorite moment of the entire trilogy.

I want you to pay very close attention Polaroid.

The following steps must be performed without the slightest variation.

1. Purchase three days worth of food.

2. Call in sick to work.

3. Lock all the doors and windows in your home and close all the blinds.

4. Obtain extra large, family-size jar of Vaseline.

5. Consume copious amounts of marijuana and psychedelic mushrooms.

6. Remove all your clothes.

7. Cover yourself from head to toe in Vaseline.

8. Watch the following scene on repeat until you lose consciousness.

9. Make your very best effort to mimic the movement of the dancer as best you can.

10. Report back to us in three days.

...via con dios.

It really is great. It adds more character depth. I've watched both versions and I found both to still be ambiguous as hell not really knowing what's going on. It takes it to a little bit of a different direction and I think that's where the confusion is with the added stuff hand-feeding the audience. Frankly I honestly can't answer if I would still love Donnie Darko just as much if the director's cut didn't exist. The changes in music are the biggest problem for fans I believe. If it had the same music as the theatrical I'm really curious what the consensus would be. Im one who prefers the director's cut though (to every film that has one). I really do believe people will find the director's cut enjoyable if they can get past the music changes. I also believe if Kelly hadn't felt forced to make the cuts and the theatrical never existed the director's cut would be widely praised. That can go for any extended/unrated/director's cut though.

I haven't seen Cinema Paradise but I'm at the point where I've put it off for way too long because I keep hearing great things about it. I'll check out both versions.
The Donnie Darko director's cut is vastly inferior to the theatrical, but I don't really like either cut. Cinema Paradiso is cinematic vomit. I've watched it twice and both times I thought it was one of the worst films I've ever seen.

I don't know. I'll always admire the director's cut of Donnie Darko. You've got me even more curious about Cinema Paradiso though. After all the great things I've heard and now hearing how bad you thought it was makes me really intrigued to see it.

You shouldn't be. People like it because it's a movie about loving movies. Unfortunately, it's the cheesiest piece of garbage imaginable. It's 2 hours of a movie literally begging movie lovers to like it simply because it's about movies. I HATE THIS FILM!
