Hugo is actually one I don't have any real interest in seeing.

I thought that myself until I saw it and I was actually happy after I did.

And I thought you were talking about Birdman. It screams... love me if you love art, acting, theater and cinema.

Funny, I just dusted off my copies of Songs from the Big Chair and The Seeds of Love after stumbling into a video of Head Over Heels on YouTube. I do have, and like, The Hurting, but these two are essential 80's pop. What I really like about The Seeds of Love is that it is almost a concept album - although the downside is that Curt Smith was effectively marginalised by Orzabal. As we all know, one thing leads to another on YouTube, and I was soon watching some live Talk Talk from '86. Another phenomenal band.

To keep things Criterion-related, I just watched Quadrophenia for the first time in probably 20 years. My brother and I used to be able to recite pretty much every line. Enjoyed it as much as I ever have - perhaps more so after living in America for 18 years. The warm nostalgia of a very English film.

Yeah both Birdman and The Revenant are severely overrated

Is The Music Room a good starter film to introduce me to his films and this culture?
Pather Panchali or The Big City.

I'm speechless. Well, not quite. This in the Criterion thread?...we've hit a new low folks! Or I guess we could just ignore it for what it is.

"Woman in Chains" is a fantastic song. I'm sad to admit the first time I ever heard it was on the 20th Century Masters CD I mentioned. It had been so long between SFTBC and Seeds of Love that I was completely blindsided when the new album came out. By then, I'd moved my main focus to hard rock and metal. It was only later that I checked the album out.

This song deserves to be immortalized in our discussion; maybe somebody else will discover and appreciate it.

I'd vouch for their third record as well seeing as it's singles are great. "Woman in Chains" is an all time fave.

To swing it back on topic, I'll play Six Degrees of Criterion separation:

"Woman in Chains"---> Boxing Helena---->Sherilyn Fenn---->Twin Peaks----> David Lynch. Whew.
Speaking of The Who, I have been on a massive Who's Next kick of late. The remaster sounds fantastic. I'm waking my neighbors up at 6 am these days with "Won't Get Fooled Again".

"That's right, people. Keith Moon is my alarm clock! Get used to it!!!"

Yeah, Woman in Chains is fantastic. As a drummer, I particularly enjoy Phil Collins' contribution behind the kit; one of the very few pure sessions he did (as opposed to playing with mates like Clapton and Plant).

Moon is also a huge influence, although not necessarily in terms of emulating his style. As good as Who's Next is, after watching Quadrophenia I've been playing the album and there's no doubting it is my favourite Who record.

Hugo is ten times the movie Cinema Paradiso is IMHO. I will concede that Cinema Paradiso does indeed have one of the all time great final scenes.

Default From Rita Kempley, Washington Post:

"There are films as lovely, but none lovelier than Cinema Paradiso, a folkloric salute to the medium itself, flickering with yesterday's innocence and lingering on the mind like bubbles in wine. Born of director Giuseppe Tornatore's childhood memories, this is a magic lantern in a Sicilian boy's hand, its warm light shed on the riches of life in a poor, stone-built land. It is, in a word, exquisite… Cinema Paradiso is cherished regret. Tornatore, who also wrote the film, was inspired by loss, the realization that communal movie-going had become a thing of the past." - Rita Kempley, Washington Post

I need to give Quadrophenia another listen. But I don't know if anything, for me, can top an album with "Baba O'Riley", "Bargain", "Behind Blue Eyes" and "Won't Get Fooled Again".

I was fortunate enough to see The Who way back in '73 at one of the first concerts at the Cap Centre in MD. It was amazing and VERY LOUD!!!!

The Music Room is my favorite Ray film released by Criterion so far, followed by Charulata and The Big City. Havent started the Apu Trilogy yet so cant comment on those.

I'm not a huge Ray fan, but I love The Music Room. It really grew on me. It only really stumbles in its final moments.

You can hear two things from my house at afternoons.

Beastie Boys being played loudly.

Or Gorillaz being played loudly.
