I watched Ordinary People (1980) for the first time a couple months back, and was blown away. One of the most touching, raw, devastating, intelligent, beautiful, and honest cinematic depictions of grief I have seen. It's a bit under-seen, despite its accolades, and to this day its best physical media release is a crappy DVD. It's the only Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards in 50 something years to not have a Blu-ray release. Paramount need to give this to Criterion; it deserves it. I would be ecstatic if it materializes, and I have to imagine it's the only way it would get a BD; I have a feeling it will happen eventually.

I watched JEKYLL the other night for the first time and wasn't too impressed. I liked elements of it (March's performance, the sexual angst, the sets), but thought it kind of plodding and meadering, and overlong. And also a bit repetitive too. Could be having read the text multiple times. But the Barrymore version reigns supreme for me.
Fair enough. In addition to those elements the atmosphere really did a lot for me. I have yet to see the Barrymore version. I have seen the Tracy version produced by MGM, which while weaker, I still enjoyed. Both of these films need the HD upgrade. I love watching early black & white horror on Blu-ray.

Is it just me, or is anticipating Criterion announcements less exciting than it used to be?

The website has been very quiet today. I wonder if announcements have been postponed.

I have always defended this film and the bashing it gets because it won over Raging Bull. IMO they are both extraordinary films.

For me personally, yes.

Maybe it's because I spoil the announcements for myself ahead of time by looking for the information on Criterion's website. Maybe it's all of the clues that Criterion and other third party websites have provided. Or maybe I'm just at a point where I don't care about film as much and/or don't care for Criterion's selections in titles.

Do you have to postpone something you've never announced?

I'm thinking it's tomorrow. Even Criterion's twitter often drops some cryptic tweet the day of. Guess we'll find out in a couple hours.

Please don't say things like that. My heart breaks when I hear something like that.

Raging Bull is certainly more in the public conscious because it's Scorsese, De Niro, more stylish, and has a performance for the ages. It's easily shown more in film classes. It's certainly a great film, but I connected with Ordinary People more and therefore have no qualms about it beating Raging Bull for the top prize. It's not important to me which movie won, it's fantastic that both were nominated.
