Thanks Scorsese! I added Winter Light to my DVD queue and I already have High and Low in my streaming queue...maybe I'll watch that tomorrow.

Mystery Train was my first Jarmusch film....I had to see his stuff after watching him in Fishing with John. And I thought it was great.

I just watched Broken Flowers the other night and really enjoyed that as well.

And I checked out the link to Eberts great movie list....a lot of Criterions on there....and how do people take this guy seriously? I mean the writer of beyond the valley of the dolls is telling us what good movies are?!?!?!?

I never cared much for Ebert as a critic. His "top movies" list is almost entirely what you'd expect from a old white guy movie critic.

Yea, I've always preferred the opinion of young, black guy film critics

Any person that takes those reviews to heart, should look in the mirror rather than at the reviewer. Most good critics (I include Ebert in this group) are not trying to tell you what movie is "good" or "bad", they're telling you what THEY liked about it, and why THEY feel you should or shouldn't see it. The thing that bothers me is the people that get really worked up about the opinion of a critic. If you like something, who cares what Roger Ebert says?

I really don't care about the opinion of one guy, and neither do most people these days. There was a time when local newspapers were the only source people had as far as movie reviews went. Thankfully that day is long gone with the advent of the internet and mass review websites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMBD. This allows for a general consensus rather that one dude's opinion like we used to have to go by.

Heck, you guys posting on this thread have pointed me in the right direction on which films to watch better than any critic ever had.

I actually think the advent of sites like Rotten Tomatoes has made things worse. Rather than people reading about a film, they just look at a "T-Meter" or whatever. I'm not saying that's what you're doing, but it's kind of a silly way to decide whether or not you're interested in seeing something. But I do agree that the internet is nice because you're able to search for different opinions that you like, as opposed to being subjected to the same voice simply because of where you live, or what's available to you.

A critic is a critic, but you must also remember that they went to school so they have the proper credentials to critique a movie the right way. Anyone can give his or her opinion, and I am not defending a critic, but they have earned the right to place judgment on someone's film. It's no different than a color commentator in any of the major sports. Eberts list of the best is actually one of the best lists, and frankly, most accurate lists as to what is a great and classic film by definition.

How many Criterions do you have? That looks like most if not all of the collection.

Criterion has over 500 titles now. That is clearly not the entire collection. We could always count the actual discs, though, and then we'd have the answer to your question of how many he has.

Not including blu-rays, there is probably around 40 DVDs per row... probably around 200 regular DVDs, plus the blu-rays and box sets on the top row.

Don't worry I don't have them all haha, I do have a lot of OOP titles like This is Spinal Tap, Sid & Nancy, the Hitchcock titles.

The top two box set rows aren't in any order at all though.

How is that a bad thing? I quit reading reviews because they tend to give too much of the movie away. So it's nice to see a general consensus of a movie with out any spoilers.

What I typically do is read a good review or two and a bad review or two to get a feel of the pros and cons of a film. But overall consensus is what I take into consideration the most. Is it foolproof? No, not at all. Movies like Inception and The Last Exorcism were two recent movies I saw in part due to positive press and absolutely hated both. But it does tend to steer me towards more good films than bad.

It's not necessarily a bad thing. Maybe I was a little rough there. And I guess it works in the way you describe, if you wanna avoid spoilers. I just find that it never really tells me much unless it's really lopsided one way or the other. I personally try to stay away from reviews prior to seeing a movie (even RT), especially if it's something I know I wanna see. And if I'm checking a review out after the fact, I prefer to read more in depth stuff. I just always thought that good film criticism can add to a film, and gives a different perspective. I'd say 99% of the reviews I read occur after I see the movie.

Default Charade

Looks as if Charade released by Criterion is region locked which I guess is not surprising considering all Blu's from Criterion are all region "A" locked anyhow.

Does anyone know if this will be getting a release for region B at some stage down the track ?
